With a change-out of equipment necessary on the VA 217 Ariane 5 ECA launcher, Arianespace has decided to postpone by a few days this mission – originally scheduled for January 23.
A new date for the mission will be announced very soon.

Operations will kick off in February, using Ariane 5 ECA for two geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) missions: VA217, with ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus, then VA216, with Astra 5B and Amazonas 4A.

The competition subject is entitled to satellite broadcasting using frequency broadcast band (BSS) ABS-2 satellite, namely: 17.3 - 18.1 GHz and 11.7 - 12.5 GHz.

Arianespace Flight VA217; Ariane 5 ECA – ABS-2 & Athena-Fidus: Launch scheduled for Thursday, February 6, 2014

With the component replacement on the Ariane 5 ECA launcher and the associated checks now being completed, Arianespace can set the date for its next launch, VA217, using an Ariane 5 ECA to orbit the ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus satellites.

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 ECA launcher is now slated for Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 pm local time in Kourou, French Guiana (3:30 pm, in Washington D.C., 20:30 UTC, 9:30 pm in Paris, and on Friday, February 7 at 5:30 am in Hong Kong).

The following launch, VA216, carrying the Astra 5B and Amazonas 4A satellites, is scheduled for March 7, 2014.

The first launch of the Soyuz rocket this year from the Guiana Space Center, VS07, carrying the Sentinel 1A satellite, is set for March 28.

Temporary hold in the Arianespace Flight VA217 countdown due to weather

February 6, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA217

Arianespace’s Ariane 5 mission with the ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus satellites is on a temporary hold due to weather conditions at the Spaceport.

The launcher and its payloads are in a “safe mode” in the ELA-3 launch complex.

Tonight’s launch window opens at 5:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana and continues to 7:35 p.m.
