Thought it was 21st June? Will be interesting to see what it does to current signal levels from the Nordic beam. Hope it doesn't go back to Sirius 2/3 levels from a few years ago 'O'

Yes, will be interesting to see how the new satellite performs. I assume it's main function is to give additional capacity to 5E rather than replace the existing satellite?

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about 1E. It doesn't seem to be doing much any more.

So is it now officially SES-5 and not Astra 4B for Europe? Why the change?

I also haven't seen any mention of a Europe wide beam like on Astra 4A but it seems unlike Astra not to have redundancy.

well i hope to god there footprint will be wider than the current one, mick in ireland, to be honest i bought a cm1.8 and thought this was it i will get the nordic beam but now i just think there an overrated and highly expensive dish and im not getting anything more than i was, so the triax 1.1m is still a great by, me thinks!

Some good details here:
_http://www.ses.com/4628551/ses-5

It looks like it's main focus will be Sub Saharan Africa with up to 24 KU band transponders and up to 12 transponders for the Nordic region of Europe plus 28 C band transponders. Astra 4A on the other hand has 46 transponders KU band for the Nordic area and just 6 for Africa and no C band. You'll be able to get both satellites with one dish. 5°E could become an interesting hotspot for southern Africa.

How does one check for a "carrier"?

A spectrum analyser will show an unmodulated carrier. I use my TBS6925 PC card and Crazyscan. Might try for this one, a little out of the ku footprint thougfh.

If the Nordic beam strength is similar to that of Astra 4A, then you should be able to see it.
