My daughter lives in a tiny one bedroom apartment in North London, rents extortionately high, no room to swing a cat assuming one was allowed to have one, not allowed to drill the walls hence not a single shelf allowed to store stuff. Lean to shelving systems require too much floor space, gripper pads with a stretch removal system are ok for small items, hence my daughter's inability to store hair spray, makeup, medication etc anywhere else apart from the top of her bedroom drawers. At my last visit I suggested making something for the 30cm x 50cm gap at the side of the bedroom drawers. As a favour two weekends ago I agreed to take a friends now not required computer desk to the tip. Having collected it, I decided I could upcycle this to fit my daughter's requirements. I am pleased with the result, but without an annealing oven I am unable to utilise most of the toughened glass. I should have mentioned I spend £2.50 on replenishing my M6 nuts bolts and washers.

I'm sure that's a very common problem for "generation rent" - lucky girl to have a lateral thinking Dad!
 
Where there's an "angle", there's (probably!) a "way" - OTOH, and TBH, the long term reduction in the permitted size of accomodation (and related constaints!) has been socially very damaging, as is clear from the example of where Topper's daughter is having to live.

I know we are not supposed to "get political" on this forum - and I don't want to go in that direction - but the "never mind the quality, feel the width (or lack of it)!" approach to housing is "not good".

BTW, I don't lean politically one way or the other to any great extent, but I know what I felt when "Maggie" said what she did about the sale of council properties and what could/could NOT be done with the funds from "right to buy" of council housing (and it was not "supportive" of what she said).

To the Staff, I fully understand that you may have to delete this post for "good reasons" - thus please do so if necessary
 
My colleagues may disagree but I see nothing contentious, although I do disagree, the reason housing is so expensive and so out of reach to Mr Average is that a very large proportion of properties in the Grand Metropolitan are not owned by UK residents.

You mentioned in the first post that the rabbit hutch is rented, I would put the blame on the use of middlemen to obtain a roof above ones head, plus the misleading techniques of enhancing the attractiveness of the property itself.
From the dubious terminiology used at the point of sale (des-res / compact/ low maintenance/ self contained), down to the outright lies that pervade a particular neighbourhood (close to amenities/twelve minutes to central London/low crime rate/gentrified etc.)
Talking of gentrification I had the misfortune to travel to the Olympic Park (looks great in the photos) last year for work, alighting at Hackney Wick and truly believed the Apocalypse had been and gone.
