very newbie question ... dish size

My Satellite Setup
I have at the moment just a sky dish. I would like to know more.

Hello,

I hope I'm asking in the right place ... I have a SkyDish (I pressume it's 40 cm) which was left by the previous owner of the house. I would like now to connect a satellite tuner to this dish.

I could get the FreeSky thing but I'm not so keen on paying Sky £20 a month when I could get it for free.

Thus, I would like to watch tv off Astra 2D (the UK stuff) and off Astra 1L (European stuff). My question ... is that Sky 40 cm dish big enough to receive both Astra 2D and Astra 1L, or would I need a bigger dish, like 60 or even 80 cm?

Yes the dish is big enough to receive either of those satellites separately, but you would have to shift it between the two.

I have tried Hotbird and 28E on a Sky minidsh (with two lnbs attched to the dish) and it did seem to work reasonably, not sure how much rain fade would affect tit though.

I would hazard a guess that 19e and 28E would also work as well. Why not have an experiment?

Normally though, something like an 80cm or so would be used, for reliability when it tips it down.

Do you mean FreesatfromSky card ? This is a £20.00 one-off payment, not £20.00 a month.
 
Sorry .. what I meant is that I don't want to pay £20 a month to Sky for the channels I would like to watch when I can watch them for free.

FreeSky does have like over 200 channels which is nice but I would like to watch TV5 and Arte as well. If you want to watch TV5 on Sky, you need to buy one of their packages.

Freesat has nowhere near 200 channels. If you ignore all the timeshifts and the regional channels - its nearer 60!

Even including all the timeshifts and regionals its only about 140 at the moment.

TV5 & Arte are fta on 19E, but you will need additional equipment over a standerd sky install to receive them.

If you want to receive 28.2E and 19.2E at the same time then best forget about the zone 1 dish. You want at least a 60cm dish and a multi LNB bracket capable of 9 degree separation. You'll also need 2 individual LNBs and a receiver with Diseqc capabilities (this rules out a Sky digibox). Check out the site sponsors, you should be able to get the lot for under £120.00

Edit - Forgot to include a Diseqc switch, takes it nearer £130.00 in total.
