A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

A reasonably good vhs player, a Scart lead and a DVR, with scart input, preferably with a hard drive for editing everything before putting onto disc.

Or if you want to buy a stand alone vhs dvd recorder combo machine. Panasonic makes a good unit. It think the model number ends in Z48. It goes for about £150 on eBay. Then once you have the dvd recorded you transfer to a PC using a program called MakeMKV which is currently free in beta. After that use something like Sony Vegas to edit it. An SP vhs recording can be up scaled to 720p.

One option would be to get a cheap PC video capture card that has Phono (RCA) inputs, they normally come with capture software. Play the video on the recorder and use a scart to phono or phono to phono cable to connect to the video capture card in the PC to capture the A/V. You should be able to pick up a second hand video capture card quite cheaply, possibly with cables but cabling is very cheap.

I have referred to using scart/phono cables only because I am not sure if your video player has an HDMI output. If it does have an HDMI output then you can use that with a PC video capture card with an HDMI input.

EDIT
Just seen the reply with link from "4wd", that item will do the job as an alternative to an internal PC capture card.

I use a device from Pinnacle Systems, it connects to the PC with a USB cable and the video/audio from the VCR connects to it with RCA jacks and cables, it also comes with video editing software.

Probably the worst suggestion - you are converting a lowish quality video twice with loss in both conversions first upscaling to HDMI and then converting to mpeg (or similar to burn to DVD). Unless the tapes are SVHS ( in which case use an svideo to usb connector) a phono to usb is more suiteable.

I once tried a video capture card and found them to be crap always dropping several frames. Talking several years ago though maybes the technology has caught up? That is why I suggested a stand alone machine to do your transferring. That is what I did. Once I was finished I sold on the machine on eBay getting my money back.
