In a context where piracy is expected to increase sharply in the coming years, it is crucial for companies to work proactively to reduce their risks. In a permanent and joint effort with its industrial partners, Viaccess supports its customers by introducing new smart-card generations every 18 months. With about 18% of the conditional access market in Western Europe, Viaccess is one of the major players in Pay-TV security. Offering the widest choice of set-top boxes in the industry, Viaccess enables the largest installed base of independent multi-channel TV providers (more than 60 worldwide), and supports smart card deployment for over 7 millions viewers. Offering the widest choice of set-top boxes in the industry, Viaccess enables the largest installed base of independent multi-channel TV providers (more than 60 worldwide), and supports smart card deployment for over 7 millions viewers. Recent new customers for the company’s range of products include NSAB in Sweden, NTV Hayat in Bosnia Herzegovina, TVR Romania In Romania, VirginMega in France, IAM and TAS in Taiwan. The Viaccess’ smart-card policy In a context where piracy is expected to increase sharply in the coming years, it is crucial for companies to work proactively to reduce their risks. In a permanent and joint effort with its industrial partners, Viaccess supports its customers by introducing new smart-card generations every 18 months. The first Viaccess PC2.4 smart card was introduced in June 2001 and has been deployed with 27 multi-channel providers since September 2001. More than 900 000 units have been shipped to date and the PC2.4 card gives full satisfaction as its security is unbreached. The first PC2.5 samples were available in February this year. It is the first Viaccess card featuring crypto-algorithm differentiation. At the same time, Viaccess will launch the PC2.6 developments later this year, leading to full availability by the end of 2004. "Our policy to continuously introduce new smart cards is bearing fruits. We strongly believe that by making piracy unsustainable, we can dramatically cut the harmful consequences piracy has on content distributors" - comments Jean-Pierre Coustel, Viaccess’ chairman and CEO. New pricing Strong with our technology fundamentals, and fully confident in the new development program outcomes, Viaccess introduces a new pricing scheme that comes up with a free card swap in case of hacking. This new pricing is composed of an up-front payment on card delivery and a monthly fee. “We have been receiving excellent feed back from our customers on this new value proposition. ABSat has already ordered several thousands units and, likewise, Teledanmark is making its way for PC2.5 deployment”, says Jean-Pierre Coustel. Source: Viaccess SA
