Weather Channel for sale?
Reports that Landmark-owned The Weather Channel might be up for sale appeared in the New York Times.
Strong reports are circulating in the US that The Weather Channel might be due a change of clothes. While all is apparently calm on the surface it seems that gusts of interest might blow in from Comcast, and even News Corp, says the NYT, with a possible surge taking bids above the $5bn mark.
Landmark sold 70% of The Travel Channel to Discovery Communications back in 1997, and Discovery mopped up the rest in 1999. Discovery then sold Travel Channel on to Cox Communications.
Weather Channel has been on air since 1982 and is one of the most widely distributed basic-tier channels in the US. It celebrated 25 years on air in May 2007.
The NYT says that investment banker JP Morgan is advising Landmark on the sale of the channel itself, while Lehman Bros is reportedly advising Landmark on the sale of other media-related assets.
