Last one for now ..
Couldn't resist grabbing this one as it passed almost directly overhead..
Noaa 19 ..
Passed over practically skimming the roof at a max elvation of 80deg ..and an azimuth of 345 deg.
It was still visible with an elevation of 9deg as it hit greenland..
practically no interference ..it being a cloudless Sunday afternoon..

error with processing I think AS ..
If I still have the raw data .. might try reprocessing..

So re-processing the raw data produces the same error sadly..
but ..there is an option to move the map overlay ...
It's a tricky operation ..getting it right ..but this is a modded image with some overlay tweaking..03131352modded.webp

I guess with some patience I could improve it some more ..but hey ...like buses ..another will be along soon..lol

Twitter user usa_satcom is receiving high-resolution weather pictures at 1.7 GHz from NOAA satellites.

So ..presumably the remaining active apt noaa birds also broadcast hi def images on 1.7 ghz ..as well as the lower frequency 137mhz ....during their passes ?
Nice images by USA Satcom ....but not much actual info on what is being used ..
We know its SDR ...but what else ?
what antenna ...what polarisation...does it require decoder software other than wxtoimg ?
I would love to have a go myself ...but more info is needed ...not just pretty pics on Twitter...
..and I definately dont tweet ..ever...not even if you stomp on me ...
..I might sqeak a little tho'

This 1.7ghz downlink for HD images must be a well kept secret ?
I put this in google search ...'apt noaa 19 hd downlink frequency' ...and drew a blank on all but 137mhz ?
where can I get more info I wonder ?

Perhaps Terryl can shed some light on this ..
He does afterall run a successful weather station/site.

That is indeed useful info ..
First I shall be looking to see if I can even pick up hints of signal on a close noaa pass....though not expecting much ..as although I have a the right antenna polarity wise ...it is not tuned for such high frequencies..
I guess I now need to see if there is possibly a QFH design for 1.7ghz ?
SDRplay covers up to 2ghz I think so covers the correct part of L band spectrum.
As tracking with a conventional dish system wouldn't be practical.
I was right it seems..
a different decoder is need ..other than wxtoimg..
This I hope will make an interesting project.

From what I read ..L band reception of apt sats is very much more directional ...and requires a dish ...or yagi ...and tracking hardware/software.
This is not really surprising as we know that UHF TV requires a directional aerial and is still round about 700 > 900mhz
L band being higher still..
I was hoping that a mini QFH would solve the tracking problem ...and give acceptable results..
Antenna experts ..feel free to jump in at any point..

This is a commercial QFH (mini) designed for 5.8ghz

Not found one myself as yet ...sadly

Just sent this guy a message via Ebay ...as he also does a 2.4ghz version..
Available in RHCP or LHCP ...
So it cant hurt to ask if he also makes them for 1.7ghz ?

It is much what I already have and aimed at the LF 137 mhz range..

According to the second part of that you should be able to used your QFH to decode the data from some of the Cubesats :D
 
There seems to be a HRPT signal on geostationary Meteosat @0W linear polarized.

I believe uhf-satcom's data is out of date. They have stopped transmitting the wefax signal long ago.
Their HRIT/LRIT on 1694.5 MHz is probably encrypted, their retransmission of them on ku band @10E definitely are.
