Weather Sat Images thread..

So who uses polar sats if noone else? Are these just left there to die?
I guess so ...
There were only 3 still operational last year ..
These too will now be left to die..
Such a waste..

..and more space junk..

..watched the data traffic on this frequency for over 2 hours now ..and seen absolutely NOTHING local ...
all traffic so far has been from the extreme South of the UK ..so WTF is this so ffing strong up here ???
I wish I could get some answers from someone in the 'system' ...cos this just looks like a waste of money ..resources...and worse ..
RF pollution....
Grrrrr
This frequency imo is only used by the extreme South of the UK ..
but is burgering up my hobby...

..anyone know much about 'skip' on these frequencies ..
Could be ionospheric conditions ?

You've been kidding us all along, VS.

You're a Southern Jessie after all and living in a Bothy on Dartmoor.

Pagers have to transmit the same message across the country, unlike mobile phones, most pagers don't transmit so can't let the network know where they're located.

I'll see if I can pin down a user/owner of the freq, you could always give them a ring and ask if their equipment is due for a service, either that or complain to ofcom, tell them it's wiping out a legal broadcast you try to receive and they might investigate (they might also bill you if they think they can pin the interference on your equipment)

I'm too late to this but if you have an unknown signal, Inspectrum seems useful:

Well ..
I have to admit..
There is no real substitute for the genuine article ..
My APT-06 arrived this morning ..
it wasn't cheap ...but I have this branch of my hobby back so worth the expense imo..
In the package you also get a cd with an upgradeablw WXtoIMG version ...with upgrade keys ..
A proper antenna is a must ...and mine is superb although homemade.
I never really used it to it's full potential with SDR devices ..
That includes SDRplay/Airspy/or indeed dongles.
Not because they didn't have enough gain ..but because they have no immunity to pager signals..
the APT does ...and although there can be occsional interferance still on some NOAAs ..this is minimal ..and acceptable ..
I set it up and left it running all day ...on auto-scan and auto image ...
and WXtoIMG with the upgrade can also patch together those images to make a composite ...and indeed ...and animation though I haven't tried the latter as yet..
I'm attaching my first composite ..

No Alex ..
I probably mixed up my posts ..and chronology.
I ordered and bought the APT this year to replace the SDR play which cost close on £200 with the older optiplex as well ..(which had been producing excellent results up till recently)
Sorry if I confused the issue ..
I must pay more attention..when I post ..
doh!

The APT toy I referred to as a dedicated receiver was just that ..
I built and dedicated a system consisting of a receiver and PC just for APT reception...
which worked fine until pox-slag crippled it ...
Now I have an actual 'dedicated' receiver' designed specifically to do this one job.

Actually ..it wasn't last year was it ..
It was earlier this year ..
I really think I'm losing the plot..
Help..!!!

So ...
Spent the evening setting up correctly SDR weather and Aero Corner ...in the playroom.
Got a few bits to add ...
but here is a photo of both Optiplex up and running ..
One showing both Aero and PlanePlotter on the top moitor ..and 1090 on the bottom monitor ...which also doubles up as the weather station..

Can you get the weather and flight patterns on Mars with that ?

Sorry guys ...
Can't quite reach the USAs East coast ...so the weather there is out of my reach ..
lol
Can I erect a 200ft pole ?

I believe uhf-satcom's data is out of date. They have stopped transmitting the wefax signal long ago.
Their HRIT/LRIT on 1694.5 MHz is probably encrypted, their retransmission of them on ku band @10E definitely are.
EUMETCast Service
The encryption is described on page 95 in the pdf, MSG Ground Segment LRIT/HRIT Mission Specific Implementation
Technical Documents — EUMETSAT

Might as well put my sketch of a 12 cm waveguide for 1.7 GHz on the shelf for now.
QFH Antenna it is then.

Anyone decoding images from 10E would like to have a go at this at some point
