guys,

was wondering if it's possible to somehow deduce the layout of my satellite cables at home (ie which ending connects with which ending, in another room) without having to run around with a TV and sat receiver and connecting them each time?

i'm not that good at physics, but was wondering whether there is either some sort of cable tester that you can use or maybe somehow find out by measuering the resistance/impedance in ohms?

Well it depends on what equipment you have to hand really. If you know any telephone engineers then a test toner would be handy if you could borrow it for a few hours. Simply connect to one end of the cable and find the one that gives produces a tone at the other end. Alternatively you could (assuming there is no other equipment connected) short out the core and braid at one end then find which is short circuited at the other using a simple meter at the other end.

Connect one end to the receiver and use a volt meter at the other end. :)

Or you can use something like the Vision V17-600 DC Tester around £13.

LOL, you now know the tried and tested method we telephone engineers used before toners were invented :-rofl2

guys, thanks, seem to have it worked out - basically i connected the sat receiver at one end and then by way of trial and elimination figured out which one is 'live'.

thanks though!
