Hey I am extreme n00b when it comes to satelites. I only know what I have read today on countless internet searches.

So my question is...

I currently have my hands on a Pace IRD (model: Cryptovision IRD50) (my electronics teacher at school gave it to me), I want to know what I would be able to do with it. As in what would I need to be able to receive free TV channels via satelite. Also how to set it up....and also weither it is illegal to receive these signals...

Any info reguarding this would be much appreciated

Think it may be a cable box as NTL/Cablelink used Cryptovision and Pace made the boxes...

"There were actually huge technical problems with the decoders since they were introduced. The mark-1 was a very good unit, but was let down by the flimsy design of the power-supply. The mark-2 was built by Pace, but the initial batches were plagued by problems of spikes in the RF section, which gave the effect of venetian-blind-type interference at every 16MHz.!"

Looks like you're out of luck then.

I think our new friend will find its an analogue receiver or possibly that cable decoder as mentioned by gameboy

If it an analogue box, then Nod4r2 you need to have a look at www.analoguesat.co.uk. No its not illegal to watch any channels you can pick up with analogue boxes.

I think the consensus is that you are outta luck with any digital signals though.
