Advice Needed What's a reasonable time to prove yourself in a new job???

I know this isn't a unique situation, but......My niece had a job; applied for a new job; was told that the position was filled but was offered a job in another branch of the same company.
She accepted, worked notice at previous job; started work but then less than 8 weeks in was told that she wasn't up to it and dismissed.

I know you've 'k all rights, but she had a secure job, tried to improve and is now out of work - all in 8 weeks!

Any suggestions?

Probation, whether Official or not, is generally three months.

My contract said they (The company, I.e. thy God) has the rights to terminate my employment with a 13 week probation period without reason given, welcome to UK employment law, fine if your a employer not so much if your a employee!

Sadly yes - not much an employee can do during the probation. My friend had the same thing - worked for about a month and then was told she wasn't up for it and let go the same day.

In US, however, you can be let go without notice at any time during your employment. Varies from state to state but the worst are like that...

The upper states are a little more fearful of litigious action, so have some rules on dismissal, but the lower states, including texas, have simple rules where they can sack you on the spot and send you packing without the need for a reason, but the usual reason is the employee is just not doing a good job...

I think it is difficult to assess a situation without more details of the industry, background of the case, job in question etc. The fact is that in order to survive these days, many companies operate using borderline ethics and unless you tow the line and agree to operate the same way you have little or no chance of keeping your job within the pre-determined probation period. Large companies openly abuse the laws on many things from creative accounting to breaking the law by cold calling and pestering people for business who are registered with the TPS. Honour and loyalty in business went out of the window many decades ago.
