Why dont sky go GSM instead of using a phoneline for call backs.

Several people I know only have a telephone line so they can use Sky TV. Why don't Sky start installing GSM devices into the sky boxes so that a phone line isn't required, instead it using GPRS or WAP.

Many home devices already do this such as House Alarms and Listening Devices to name examples.

Obviously GSM signal may be a problem, but the modules for GSM/normal phoneline could be easily changeable.

Any thoughts?

More cost to start with, and I suspect more problems later on when the box is out of contract. Currently most users do not have a phone-line connected, they simply disconnect it after 12 months as it is only a requirement through the first 12 months of a contract. Why do you think this would be an advantage to anyone?

,in a old satellite magzine i read, sky use the (free)phone line to find out, from the subsribers, what kind of programm they are watching, when the receiver is connected one year to a sky telephone 0800 freeline, that sky can collecect every information, what the customers, look for programm, after one year the receiver is free of charge, like a little present!
the magazine says, but this is long time ago,but i think sky will still practice this, because the earn a lot of money, selling, the collected information to other companys, that make the assinment,to find out more information, about there product, and how will be acepted in the market !

It is a thought, have you tried phoning SKY and asking them?

Why don't sky do it? As Topper says, Cost, lack of the need to do it and last of all, they would have no way of substantiating whether multiroom boxes were in the same house.

So quite simply, aint going to happen.
