WIN7 and Philips TV

Hi,

For 2 years I am using a philips 37PF9731D/10 TV set (3 years old) connected to a desktop WIN XP and a FireDTV with CI sat card.
Everything functioned correctly, though the WIN XP was getting a bit slow.
Recently I build a new desktop in the hope things would react a bit faster. I used, among other units, an ASUS MoBo ( M4A88TD-M-EVO-USB3) with build in video card ATI Radeon 4250HD (recent driver sept 2011). I connected everything up and installed WIN7 Ultimate 64bit. The monitor I used was an older Dell which I had as spare. So far so good.
When I connected (with VGA cable) this new desktop to my TV set I was astonished I had no picture on the screen. More specific, during startup I could see the ASUS option panel (F8, F10 buttons among others) and also the Windows logo. But when the login panel should appear there was only a blue screen (from the TV set). So I could not logon and eventualy change display settings. I changed beforehand the resolution settings to the lowest possible.
So I think the TV set is not recognised or cannot be recognised by the operating system or video card. But how can I force recognition when I can not login. Or is it a driver problem? Or something else. Would a HDMI connection be better? For the moment I have no HDMI cable though.
How to tackle the problem?

I may be wrong, but I had a look at the Manual online, and there's a Connections option in the TV Menu which seems to suggest you have to choose VGA to allow the TV to 'find' the link to your VGA card.
 
FWIW ..I would personally go down the hdmi route ..as the set would/should automatically handshake with the on board graphics card ..
Thus the set should auto adjust to whatever aspect ratio is being output from the motherboard ..
But first check that you have chosen to output a ratio which is within the TVs acceptable limits ..otherwise ..no handshake ..and nothing on screen.
Using the hdmi out also provides outputs at HD resolutions ...so you hopefully wont be restricted in any way by the media output from the pc ..
There is also the the 'true black' factor to be considered ..which often needs to be adjusted for vga outputs ...and can be about 10% black level different to the 'true' black level outputs required when watching ..say.. a movie from the pc ..
(reduced definition in the darkest or blackest areas of the image..)

This is true and works fine with the XP desktop.

I think I have to provide me with a HDMI cable as soon as possible, and see what happens.
