Advice Needed Window Air Conditioner Hole in the Wall

I have an old window AC in my bedroom. It is not working these past 20 years, but it still there because it fills in the hole in the wall.
I have decided that I want to take it out but my problem is what to do with the hole there?
It is a small AC and it measures about 50cm x 50cm.
I am not keen on using bricks there but would much prefer putting in a custom made window that can be made dark.
Any good ideas are most welcome. Thanks
 
I've seen windows with integrated blinds, on American home building programs.
These are blinds built into the windows, which you control by running your finger down the side.

Not sure if you can get them custom made, for specific window sizes, but it might be worth contacting local suppliers.

I have in my kitchen a specially made blinds with sliding windows. It is much larger than the hole from the window AC.
I guess I will have to talk with a local shop if they can do a 50cm x 50cm just the frame and the blinds. Hopefully this is not going to be too expensive, as I hate the idea of using bricks.

No a bad idea, but I live on the 5th floor and my insurance company would not insure any cat (which I don't have) if they know about having a cat flap on the 5th floor, even with the alleged 9 lives.
 
Seriously, I went this morning to a local shop that makes blinds. They gave me an estimate of 1500 NIS (~300 Pound) but I must take out the AC and renovate the wall around the hole before they would come and take measurement.
That would be another 200 Pounds roughly speaking.
Looks like putting bricks is the cheapest way to go, unless I find a cheaper solution that is not custom made.
 
I think a fish tank would be a fabulous solution although you may end up with poached fish in summer

What a great idea. Goes well with my fish only diet these days.
In winter, I would let the rain fill the tank with fresh water.
 
I got someone today to take out the window AC
It is a 30 years old piece of junk. The metal housing was all rusty and flaky.
Too much mess all over the room.
Now I have a 50cm x 50cm hole waiting to be closed.
The most common solution is to use bricks so I am trying to get some estimates from one or two guys.
I suppose it is easier for them now without the AC in place.
In the meantime, I filled the hole with several pillows wrapped in nylon. Not a pretty sight I know but I can't have an open hole because of the light and the dust that the wall is throwing into the room.
Wish I got rid of it twenty years ago. Oh well, better late than never.

Enlarge the hole, stick a dish behind it.

That's a very thin looking wall there.......... o_O

(but then, this house I'm in has walls about 15" thick, so most other walls look thin!!)

You are right. Now you got me worried am I living in a house of cards?
15" thick that's very good and I suppose it can withstand earthquakes much better than mine.
This was probably the standard brick size used for outer walls in Israel some 40 years ago, but I am not sure what they use these days. I think already made large blocks and not brick by brick for 10-20 storeys buildings.
 
Thin wall houses are designed so that if an Earthquake does hit, the occupants can rely on just the tin foil helmet (which is all anyone should be wearing indoors)

Nah, the walls of the houses round here are mostly sandstone (inner walls seem to be red brick though going by the dust from drilling holes), if a quake of enough power hit round here (never really happens in the UK, a few tremors here and there, but never a quake), these houses would probably crumble... o_O

Exactly where should the tin helmet be placed?

For some reason, Blackadder's codpiece has just sprung to mind.
