working out dish height to clear obstacles

whats the best way to work out how high a dish needs to be in order to clear trees etc

i have my dish about 4 metre high up on my house and would like to lower it if possible

the neighbour has a couple trees in the garden 15-20m away that aren't that tall in size

dishpointer tells me that the trees would need to be over 12metres to block the signal, can this be trusted ?

how does dish pointer work this out, does it mean 12metres with the dish on the ground ?

i've always just thought stick it up high to get over the trees but maybe it doesn't need the height

A good point not to trust dishpointer.com 100% ... it's not bad but we've tested it and it's not 100%. According to dishpointer we shouldn't get some difficult satellites we do from some sites.

Use an angle finder at the bottom of the dish in the direction it's pointing to check a satellite and if the dish sees all of the beam, non of it or a percentage (a 1/3rd of the dish is often more than enough for strong satellites).

dishpointer measures from the ground - so if your dish is higher, add that to the minimum height eg: 12m will clear 16m including the 4m height of the dish.

According to their FAQ, it is height from the base of the dish.

Dishpointer.com calculates from the ground then you add the height of the dish (to the base of the dish)... I think the word 'height' is partly misleading here as a description of the height to the base of the dish that sounds instead like the overall height ... we know.

How accurate is the alignment tool?

The calculated look angles and values such as Azimuth, Elevation, LNB skew, Dish skew or Dish tilt are based on sound mathematic formulas and are very accurate. The alignment line is drawn on the Google satellite image map according to these values. The question is how accurate is the geo-coding of the satellite images, i.e. is the satellite image of your house accurately mapped to its actual geographic location (longitude and latitude)? Based on my own satellite dish setups and from numerous user feedbacks, the accuracy is amazing! The alignment tool points exactly(!) in the same direction as my own satellites dishes do.

But one thing to bear in mind is the perspective of the images as they are not always shot directly from above (e.g. the sides of your house are visible). In that case, it’s best to choose a landmark which is roughly at the same height as your dish. I guess if you have a look at the satellite image of New York City with all the skyscrapers, you’ll know what I mean.
 
well am hoping to lower the dish to about the level of the 1st floor window height 3metres ish so i can use a flat roof mount on top of an outbuilding joined on the house

i thought dishpointer would be measuring from the ground up
