Well, it's now clear that Microsoft DIDN'T close all the backdoor upgrades to W10 from W7 - a U3A colleague found this link "Download Windows 10" ( Download Windows 10 ) from somewhere! I was very doubtful that it would work but he said that he'd upgraded an old W7 m/c a week ago and the process didn't even ask for the Product Key - so I had a go with my old Acer X275 Win 7 Pro desktop, and that did actually work, and again without asking for the Product Key, (albeit at the 2nd attempt after it hung in a "looping mode" 1st time around.), and so it's now running Win 10 Pro. OTOH, it then did lots of further updates (and reboots!) and I've had to spend the last hour or so removing a lot of the unwanted "c**p" Apps that Windows 10 installs without asking (e.g. why would I need 3x Xbox apps or the Camera App, when I don't have an XBox, and the old desktop doesn't have a camera???). Some of those Apps can be uninstalled via Settings but many cannot - and so I did some digging and found "IObit Uninstaller 8 Free" which managed to remove pretty much everything I didn't need .
