ZIF tuner for Pace 2500N?

Anyone pulled one of these out?

Mine's dead and needs replacing, but I can't see how to remove it short of pulling the main PCB (which is tricky-looking....). It doesn't feel like a ZIF to me, but looks like it. It's socket says 'ZIF1200'.

Shot in the dark I know, but worth an ask...

I'm going to start a section for this type of question, they are too techie for the general forums, but well within the capabilities of many of our members, particularly those from an electronics background.

LOL, thanks. That's the place that set me off on this mission.... my Pace was lying upside down at the bottom of a very deep box of things-to-be-fixed until I found that special offer!

@rolfw - Good idea, there was noplace obvious to post it...
 
If its a multi layer board and you really dont need to salvage the old component, cut all the pins holding it to the motherboard, and desolder the chassis ends. Braid can help above and beyond a solder sucker on the remaining bits however PCBs nowadays are very sensitive and dont take kindly to lingering heat.

A lot of hobbyists have a 15 or 25W soldering iron, desoldering a metal box such as a tuner usually requires a bit more OOOMPH.

It's definitely supposed to be Zero Insertion Force, like a CPU socket, but I can't figure how to physically remove it. It's clamped through the back plate of the chassis, so there's no simple 'releasing the nut on the back and pulling up'...

I'm going to have to sleep on it and get the Stilsons out again tomorrow!

They're supplied on an exchange basis, so I don't want to get the cutting gear out just yet.

Maybe if I unscrew all those screws on the back, the back of the chassis will acually come off.... oh well it doesn't work as it is, so nothing to lose!
 
Errr, I guess that ZIF doesn't mean what I thought it meant.

The company in question told me I need to de-solder from the mainboard.

Wish me luck....
 
ZIF was, I thought , the abbreviation of 'zero IF,' where the second stage of demodulation is bypassed, giving straight to baseband conversion . Its not a term for the physical connection to the board.
 
Back panel needs to come off remove screws and hex nut on lnb input socket, then screws holding main board. The zif module can then be un-soldered from the main board taking care not to damage the print! this is best done with a desoldering pump or solder wick. I have changed 20/30 of these modules with no problem.

The ZIF is also "zero insertion force" as used on sockets on programmers this must be where the confusion arises.

One last quickie, I've asked MCES twice if this part will fit my Pace 2500N, and this is the sort of answer I got TWICE!

Sorry to be a pain, but can you just confirm that it will work in my 2500N?

Yes this is the correct tuner for the Pace BSKYB 2400 as fitted with the ZIF tuner

What's with the 2400 stuff?!?!?! Why won't they say 'Yes, it fits the 2500N'?!?!

Now shall I use my 15W iron, my 25W iron or my 240V steam iron...:eek:

Finished soldering (and burning holes in the kitchen table top :D ) re-installed everything, and to my very great surprise, IT WORKS!!!!

Aha! Cut it into 1" squares and mail it to me. The mood I'm in, it'll be fixed by morning!

Its OK BG. The computer I toasted was from the local tip, which I purchased for the princely sum of £3, but It did come with a dvd drive which works perfectly, so now I don't have to take my old one back out of the kids computer.
