Although DAT and DDS tapes are mechanically identical and the DDS drive may be able to read DAT tapes I am very dubious it will be able to write data to a DAT tape. IIRC DDS tapes had a leader which told the drive what spec (DDS 1, 2, 3 etc) and used a lot higher quality tape from DDS2 onwards than DAT - original DDS1 tapes (same as DAT) only hold 1.3GB whereas your DDS3 tape drive holds 12GB . Are the tapes actually DAT tapes or do they have a DDS logo on them?

Sony DDS data cartridge DG-60M by way of example is the one I inserted last night..
 
Evan (936 x 1664).webp Hi Evan, unfortunately the Backup Exec tape software that I have found is for Netware servers so no good to you however I did find win 95 Colorado installation disk and HP Colorado II for win 98, I suspect the latter will be more useful to you and am happy to post to you if you need it so just PM me your address and postcode

Sadly Colorado nor backup exec works with this dat drive..
I read that I need an old vertias backup exec software ...for DESKTOP ..
The version of BE that Neil kindly donated was a NETware version..
Fleabay to the rescue again ...where I found someone selling
Veritas Backup Exec for Win95/98 and NT ..desktop edition..
Original packaging and licence...
but it was a US seller..
Price was good imo ..
worked out at approx £15 incuding postage ...and delivered between 8th and 14 th MAY ..
In an impulsive move I hit the buy button..

Someone one flea bay was selling a used untested DELL DTS-10000 ..
Now as far as I know ..SDT is the Sony standard ..
and is therefore possibly a re-branded Sony drive ..
I didn't really buy it for the drive ..though this will be interesting in itself..
max 40gb storage ..
fast scsi interface ...
But I really bought it so as to rob the 5.25 inch bay mounting kit ..
At £2.00 plus postage ..I figured ..might as well..
 
Closer examination of the swag bag of tapes I got
14 in total ..
Thought it was 15 till I realised one was a head cleaning cartridge..
;)
Maybe I'll find out whats on em ..maybe I wont ..but hopefully will get to re-use em..DSCF0036.webp

There's no cleaner in the universe strong enough to deal with that... :p

That makes it a DDS4 drive or later. Although it should be able to read your tapes. the drive may not be able to 4write reliably to them. The tapes should have a rating on them DDS3, 4 etc.
 
My £2 SDT-10000 arrived today ..
..and although no manufacturer ident on the unit ...other than the model number..
looks every inch a Sony..

The model no. comes up as a Sony model, so, it's a Sony... :)

That one looks to take wider tape than 4mm ..and cant be fitted in a tower pc anyway ..

Just installed the SDT-10000
Powers up ok.
It is recognised by the scsi host adapter..
Is natively recognised in XP System Devices ...as 'Sony SDT-10000 scsi sequential device'
So ..conclusive proof if any were needed of it's origins.
Obviously I cannot test it ...as like the SDT-9000 ...I need suitable 3rd part software ..which hopefully is on it's way from the USA.
It does however accept the head cleaning tape ..and does run the busy light for a few seconds ..
So I guess the automated cleaning system is proof of tape movement..

Received my USB IDE external optical drive enclosure but discovered it was "new in box" with a fitted unused DVD rewriter - so decided to leave as is and regionalised the drive to play region 1 (US) DVDs. So now waiting again for another external enclosure to house my USB DDS4 drive.

Does anyone have a copy of HP Storageworks so I can try the drive.
 
I'm not 100% certain but if there's a device driver for the scsi card you should be able to you use it in Linux right away and it becomes /dev/st0, like
Backup: tar cvf /dev/st0 *file(s)*
Restore: tar xvf /dev/st0 *file(s)*
There are more tricks for spanning tapes and such, command mt for rewinding and stuff.
There's a advansys.c in the kernel but I can only see older aha drivers.
