Microsoft will force Windows 10 fans to change the way they access the web this week

MICROSOFT is making a big change this week that will force Windows 10 users to switch to its latest web browsing software.

Microsoft first revealed this news late last year with the Redmond company saying that support and security upgrades for its legacy version of Edge would be ending on March 9.

With this ageing browser not getting the vital updates it needs to keep users safe online it seems Microsoft now wants to make sure everyone is moved over to its latest and greatest browsing experience.

In a post on its support page, Microsoft said: "To replace this out of support application, we are announcing that the new Microsoft Edge will be available as part of the Windows 10 cumulative monthly security update—otherwise referred to as the Update Tuesday (or “B”) release—on April 13, 2021.

"When you apply this update to your devices, the out of support Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application will be removed and the new Microsoft Edge will be installed. The new Microsoft Edge offers built-in security and our best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem, all while being more secure than Chrome for businesses on Windows 10."

Microsoft "Sludge" :( - I generally use FF, but have to use Chrome on the "lounge" laptop because, for some reason, FF doesn't give me access to formatting & emogies (etc.).

Fedora 34 is a wonderful alternative to anything from Microsoft ......
Take a look at Win10 LTSC. No store, no shit apps, no games etc etc, just an OS to run one's programs.
I'd call it win 7 MK2++. Using it on two pc's for a long time, activated and behaving perfect.
Full security updates & fixes, & none of those gigantic new version upgrades overwriting every setting.
Adding O&O shutup and one is immediately a long way towards full control and peace of mind.

Info > Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 & google it.

For the coming version, cutting support from 10 years to 5, but having 5 years stability with no version update mess-ups is still very nice :O) and the 2019 version will seemingly be supported until 2029.

I've been getting repeated messages from Microsoft for weeks now to agree to update my Windows 10 with version 20H2,because the 1909(19H2) version I'm using has reached the end of the update.I have no problem accepting the version proposed by Microsoft, but after reading some reports, some unfavorable, from some users,I am still thinking to accept the update.
In fact, the only major reservation I have against 20H2 is related to the drivers for my dvb cards. For this reason I would like to know from those who work with these cards on the latest version of Windows if they have problem and how do these cards work with 20H2?I'd appreciate it if he could elaborate.
Thanks.

Make a disc image of os partitions (c: + the small boot partitions) so you can later revert everything in 5 minutes if needed. Macrium Reflect recommended. Save the image to a known well working external disc (alt another disc\psrtition on same pc) and make the reflect usb winPE usb boot stick. Test a boot with the winpe stick. If not reading the usb, one may have to adjust boot pref. in bios or using one of the f keys immediately after boot.

Then do the update and test it out for a period. All well, then that's it, not all well then restore to the previous state with the reflect image, and all will be well like nothing ever happened. Then wait for \ look for any fix \ driver for whatever may have been troublesome before trying the (up?)grade again.

Hello to all!
what do you think of Bit Defender? is it enough for a no games daily use of Window 10?
Is it still worth paying for Norton, kaspersky etc?

BitDefender is reported to be very effective but relatively expensive - OTOH PCPRO mag is running a "special deal" for a 3-device licence 2yrs sub for less than £30 using a code in the mag.

OTOH, you can, and I regularly do, buy 10-device licence 1 yr subs to Norton for less than £25 (normally via Amazon) - and I think that's a worthwhile "expense" as it covers 4-5 PC's, 2 phones and 2 tablets, i.e. less than 5p/week per device, albeit that changing the licence key every year is a little bit of a hassle. Similar deals are often available for Kapersky.

PS: with Norton, if you want on-line support then you have to agree to "automated renewal", and that is VERY expensive, so you need to cancel automatic renewal about a month before the sub runs out, or else an automated licence renewal payment is taken from your card about 2-3 weeks BEFORE that sub runs out (and it IS then a real hassle to get the cash refunded).

As for MS removing IE from W10, that looks like it WILL could be a real hassle for me (and other users of Hikvision NVRs) who have to use IE to access the house NVR because all the other mainstream browsers seem to throw fits if I try to use them to do that.

OTOH, I only use IE for that purpose, and I use "Edge" as little as possible because I don't like the way it does most things, and it doesn't seem to have some of capabilities of FireFox which I normally use and like.

Although it's no secret to anyone, yet Google Chrome knows more than you'd like to. I think it's good to remember that.
Let's be honest here anyone who surfs the net is leaving a digital footprint regardless of what precautions you think you may be taking. Information is king just as much as cash is

I meant ,by "bit defender" the one that comes as the antivirus in the Window 10 license... which is part of the package
Is that sufficient for day to day computer use,no games or heavy use of streaming?

So you meant Windows Defender, it is difficult to say, it is entirely an individual matter. If you put your head above the parapet and campaign for specific issues then probably not, if you do online banking, probably not, although there are certain browser add-ons available to enhance security, available from your bank, from what you say in your post you may be ok however it only takes one bogus email accidentally downloaded to alter/change that situation and turn your pc into a money-making machine for others.

I use MalwareBytes Premium on my lappy and PC along with Windows Defender, both with everything turned on, particularly browser protection.
