As you should be aware, the current flood warnings in Queensland make this country's plight somewhat small in comparison.

The flood area is estimated to be about the size of Germany and France combined (for US citizens - the size of Texas), with the waters moving at around 10-15 miles per hour in an esterly direction towards the sea.

Some areas have been submerged by waters as deep as 8 metres, and with the additional rain in the past two days, the towns near the sea are expected to get deluged by an even larger head of water between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning - Australia time.

Many webcams are already offline owing to power outages and submergence, however a few are operating in areas not yet hit.

Rockhampton airport cam should be online in about five hours time as the sun comes up, but the airport has closed to all domestic in the past six hours in preparation for the rise in water.

I was given to understand size comparison must be in units of Wales -

As if rising floodwaters were not bad enough, Queensland residents now have to deal with a plague of snakes and crocodiles.

The reptiles are seeking shelter in dry residences. Inhabitants of Rockhampton, one of the worst hit Australian areas, have reported seeing multiple serpents over the last few days.

Barry Moessinger, who lives in Rockhampton which is 370 miles north of Brisbane, said: “I have spotted about 15 snakes every day over the last week. There are heaps of them.

“First we had a plague of mice, followed by a lot of frogs, so we knew the snakes would come next to feed."

Extra anti-venom has been now airlifted into Rockhampton. Health officials and the city mayor have warned neighbours to be on the look out for dangerous snakes, spiders and crocodiles which have been forced onto higher ground by the flooding.

Brad Carter, the Rockhampton mayor, said: "Snakes have been swimming at people's feet as they make their way through the water.

"I know one guy who killed four snakes this morning, including a Taipan which can be deadly.”

Rockhampton has been devastated by biblical-sized flood caused by cyclone Tasha which has completely submerged the airport runways.

The town is basically cut off from the outside world which is why a massive evacuation project is being carried out. At the same time the army is airlifting in supplies to the remaining residents.

More than 4,000 homes have been flooded and the power supplies are also being disrupted.

In the rest of Queensland some 200,000 people have been affected in about 22 rural towns. The damage is expected to cost more than one billion dollars

Just getting reports of the Balonn(e ?) river on a surge since rains started last night.

This one is due to peak at an additional head of water 14 metres sometime before the end of the weekend.

The Balonne is now set to submerge at least 10% of the houses in St George early tomorrow. Flood defences set up in the past week are expected to keep another 30% from being totally destroyed.

Further down river the towns of Dirranbandi, Thallon and Hebel are expected to be cut-off from the outside world on Monday evening, with the waters unlikely to recede for a month.
