Yes! 3 meters! Ku band, with stand, in-built heating system (to melt snow). Take it away for £0.00. I bought this in a moment of madness. Now we will be downsizing and, hopefully (says my wife), we will not have room for it. It is big. A 2 man job to lift it. The stand is also heavy. You will need a flat bed truck or similar.
Location :- In SW Scotland, 35 mls south of Glasgow, 10 miles off the M74. Has not been built up.

Flip! That IS big. Foe the benefit of others could you tell us if the dish breaks down into smaller pieces? Do you know what make it is?

A couple of photos uploaded wouldn't go amiss.

Good luck. Wish I had the space but that's bigger than my garden!

EDIT.

Just noticed that you're a new member so wouldn't have the permissions to upload yet. If you want to add some photos post here first so one of the Admins can change your profile.

Hi Guys,
Make? Not known I'm afraid. Does it break down into smaller lumps? Only with a grinder. Background? Passing a satellite farm one day I took a wander around the outside, just being nosy. 6 + huge dishes. I asked a few questions of a guy in beside the dishes and he invited me in to have a closer look. At that time I'd just started up in business myself as a TV AE and satellite dish installer - R&TV engineer to trade. Any info at that stage was good info. There were several dishes, from 1m80 to 4m7o, face down in the grass. I asked why, and was told "surplus to requirements". I expressed an interest in the 1 meter 80 cent, Ku offset, unit and was told I could have it if I wanted it. How much? No charge, BUT! But? You will have to take that one too, he said, pointing at the 4 meter 70 cent Cassegrain dish. It cost me £160 to transport both dishes to my home, where the huge 4m70 dish was transferred to my front garden. The 1m80 went round the back. Out of sight where it remains to this day.
The result? The Cassegrain dish became a bit of a tourist attraction, so much so that the local council sent me a rather miffy letter stating as I had a total of 5 satellite dishes, only one of which was of an appropriate size, 90 cms, on the property it was unlikely I'd get planning permission for the big beast. They couldn't have seen the 1m80. But I had to agree. I had tried to offload it FOC, getting in touch with universities and various businesses I thought might want it. The uni's were interested but couldn't get it past the bean counters. A £40,000 - £50,000 dish FOC. But the bean counters objected to the £200 - £300 fee to uplift and deliver!! So I took my Black and Decker grinder to it, cut into pie shaped segments and took it to the 'scrappy'. Result? He paid me £170 for the metal. Full time result? I got a 1m80 satellite dish for free and the £10 paid for petrol and telephone calls. And where did the 3 meter dish come into this?
I passed the satellite farm one day months later and popped in to update them with the story. In the course of conversation I had to agree 4m70 was a bit too big for a domestic situation and when asked if I would have had more chance with something in the order of 3m, ........ Did I see it coming? Nope. Their bosses were coming the following week and they had to get rid of it. Within 10 minutes of arriving I found myself the nervous owner of a 3 meter Ku offset satellite dish. The 1m 80cm was a cracker, so I really was duty bound to help in the disposal of the 3 meter dish. So it was mounted on top of my little van and off I toddled. Stopped by the police! Hired a flat bed truck! And with help of a friend it landed in my back garden, where it has been for 6 - 7 years, or more. Still cannot give it away. But it has added spice to my life. It is facing the scrappy, guys, unless some kind-hearted soul on the SW Scotland will take it. Help??? Anybody?

Wow.... if only it wasn't for Nazis in UK's local councils....

Do upload pictures of your dishes, past and present - the bigger, the better!

I weep into my beans on toast.

It is a good story though and am I right in thinking the 1.8m is still there hiding under the radar, so to speak.

My neighbors probably wouldn,t speak to me - if i had a 3 metre dish permanently installed -- would love to play around with a dish that size for a while though - just to see what it would pull in from here - :)

There is enough controversy around here right now, as someone has applied for planning permission to install on his farmland - a "very large" wind turbine less than a couple of miles from here --
i,m on the edge of The Bowland Forest conservation area -- close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park border ------ you cant just do anything you want out here --:( anything you do is noticed right away .
i,m lucky that my current dishes are out of sight from most public viewpoints:)

@ Analoguesat the thought of a 3 metre dish sitting on a large tractor tyre makes me smile :):):)

As has been noticed I am a new entrant to the forum - though I signed up a long time ago I'd been diverted onto other things. So much to do, so little time. I confess also I'm not exactly 100% computer literate, nor am I on Facebook. I don't twitter, tweet or twaddle. I initiated access to your forum as I find the subject fascinating. But forgot about you. Then an email appeared, the July14 Ebulletin, which reminded me I'd signed up. At that time I'd gathered grinder, drill, etc, etc to cut up the beast and dump it. But it is beautiful, hence the hope someone out there might be able to take it away. Note the language - the difference between wanting and being able to actually 'take it away'. Anyway. I thank you all for the interest shown.
Oh!!!! Something else you might find interesting, and is relatively inexpensive to start up, and yes, it is all about getting pictures off satellites, but you don't need another dish, so no problems with planners. You will need an aerial though, 2 x simple X's one above the other, a free computer program and a cheepo receiver. The pictures of GB on the weather forecast? They come from LEO satellites. Low Earth Orbit satellites. Check out 'rig.org.uk'. Used to be involved in that until an SSEB electrical storm destroyed my receiver. Must get back in one day. Thank you all for your interest. And should you ever pass a satellite farm, drop in and ask the questions. You never know your luck.

Hi m8 ..
If you are referring to the NOAA sats ...
Then yes already had a go at this..
I use a homebuilt QFH circular polarised antenna ...and a simple USB dongle designed for TV reception and repurposed for Software defined radio ..
Results have been excellent..
But have yet to set this up on my Win7 OS ..
Luckily I can dual boot to XP and still use it..
Another job to do ..but as you say Too much to do ..and not enough time ..etc etc

Hi guys,
I am having more than a little difficulty navigating the site. Put it down to anything you want, but old age, senility and head full of all sorts of stuff is not helping. Message to Nelson B: Forgive my seeming disinterest! It ain't that! I am not as computer au fait as I'd like to be. But! There isn't anything new in that. So. Apologies all round. It ain't bad manners. It is stupidity. Why do you think my handle is "grumpyoldman"? I am away out again. The garden has to be watered. I did send you a reply of sorts, nelson b, didn't I?

I've chopped stuff out of the above as, when I tried to send it, I got a message in red saying 'no more than 420 characters.

Thats probably an anti spam thing in the software. New members posts are all auto moderated by the forum software.

Nothing personal - everyone gets it when they first join - as a popular site we get targeted a hell of a lot by spammer wishing to peddle their mature content, sexual stimulants, commercial card shares and gawd only knows what.

A few more posts and you will automatically be removed from the auto mod list and all restrictions will disappear.

(Please dont be offended - in the 10 years or so Ive been on the staff Ive seen some pretty unpleasant things in the moderation list which never make it into public view).
