Having recently bitten the bullet and upgraded to a paid version of anti virus software, I'm now regularly reminded that I should further upgrade to have their encryption add on and their vpn add on etc.

I always thought it was the €8 or so per month that French banks charge for the card that put people off
ah, you might well be right. This had never occurred to me :)

Yes, I live in department 50 but the border with Mayenne (dept 53) is only 500 metres south of me. Therefore I usually cross over into Mayenne to shop. Years ago we tried to pay a cheque in at our (non) local CA, much head scratching ensued and filling in of forms in triplicate and I think a charge that was probably half the value of the cheque
Quite often the shops around here will have a sign on each till saying something like "all cheques up to 100EUR require ID. More than 100EUR requires two forms of ID. No cheques over 250EUR. No cheques from other departments". Does France really have more of a problem with rubber cheques than the UK? Still - I don't think the bank card acts as a cheque guarantee card here.

SWMBO has paid at the till by cheque before now and shown her drivers licence. I don't have a cheque book.....and carry very little cash.....

I very rarely write cheques these days, so when I do need to a) I can never find the chequebook and b) I generally mess it up about 3 times so end up rewriting the cheque and destroying the incorrect ones :(

Not many shops in UK accept cheques these days.....much to the M-i-L's disgust, so if we're out shopping with her we'll pay and then she'll reimburse..... with £50 notes. That often creates a stir in Morrisons - as in;'Ooh! I've never seen one of those before.'

I gave my last one in a restaurant on Saturday. The girl on the till was dithering so much deciding where to put it I thought I'd walked into Open All Hours.:-rofl2

The Swiss Franc has 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1000 Franc notes (is about 1.45CHF:1GBP at the moment). ATMs won't give out anything smaller than 50. Shops don't bat an eyelid if you pay with one of the larger notes - I saw a lady buying sandwiches (maybe 8CHF) at the supermarket round the corner with a 1000CHF note once :) They won't even ask you if you have anything smaller!

Retail stores in the UK were originally given a date by some of the banks to cease accepting cheques, way back in 2007/8, some complied but others did not, then just before the deadline it was extended and this has happened a couple more times and I understand it has now been extended to 2018. The retailer I worked for stopped in 2007 when the bank put up their cheque processing charges.

I asked my bank in Spain for a cheque book. After they fell about laughing, the bank director told me we hav,n´t issued one of those for years. OLB is the way all things appear to be going. Also, they sent me a contactless card I didn´t even ask for and revoked my chip & pin!

What may ask is a "J" cloth????????
IIRC the J-Cloth is non-woven. Whether this is just a manufacturing process necessity or has some practical benefit I know not.
