    dish tuning tips wanted

If the makers get profit from it, all the better as far as I'm concerned... Try having Portuguese TV for a couple of years, and you'll know what I mean by cultural. It's tough out here in potato country! I think I know what I did wrong before; the tuner settings had disq enabled, but the 2...

    dish tuning tips wanted

I don't know what I did, but while mucking about earlier I deleted the channel list. Now I just re-scanned [automatic], and I have free to air channels working. I can't check how many, since my other half has been culturally deprived for so long, she won't let me switch away from QI. Thanks...

    dish tuning tips wanted

That's odd; I show a strong signal, a partial channel list, but no reception. I assumed there must be encryption; I checked on the "freesat" site and it said you need their receiver box and an internet connection... Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

    dish tuning tips wanted

Thanks Huevos; I used the plugin "openwebif". It took me a while to figure out how to access it from my pc. For anyone else who needs to know, you have to put into the address bar of your browser; ip address, 192.168.1.xx:0000 where 0000 is the port the plugin is set to, and of course the ip...

    dish tuning tips wanted

Hi all; I've just got my new 1.8 meter primary focus dish bolted to the roof. I've lined it up using a handheld GPS [marked a point 150 meters away, lined it by sight] and my adjustable builder's level. Tomorrow I'll connect it to my receiver [vu+ duo] and attempt to fine tune it. LNB is...

    Earthing and Lightning Protection

I have no neighbors with a setup out here, and even if I did that wouldn't mean theirs were done right. A friend of mine installs off grid power systems; he says static buildup during storms can wipe out a 2kw inverter using the house wiring as an antenna. That's without even having a strike...

    Earthing and Lightning Protection

My new 1.8 meter dish has just been delivered, and I'll be bolting it to my roof tomorrow. Here in Portugal, there is no culture of lightning protection, and I haven't actually dealt with the issue before. What do members recommend? Should the dish be earthed? should I put a lightning rod...

    which 1.8 dish, LNB Portugal?

Thanks; that was what I thought. For some reason they cost 2.5 times more here in Portugal. I'm getting closer...

    which 1.8 dish, LNB Portugal?

I don't have any English neighbors; mostly Germans around here. Most British south of here are getting reception with 1.4 meter dishes, but I hear a lot of complaints. One guy just switched to 1.8 meter because of poor / unstable signal quality with a 1.4. Anyway, I ordered the Televes 1.8...

    which 1.8 dish, LNB Portugal?

I need to buy a dish for receiving from Astra 28.8 East from Algarve, Portugal. I'm going a bit over-size as future proofing. The best deal I've been offered so far is for a "televes" branded dish, at 490 Euros including tax, feedhorn, and delivery. they claim 44.8 dB, focal length 755mm...

Which is the best image for the Vu+ Duo

2 votes for Vix... We don't get TDT here; I get TV over ip. It doesn't cost more than broadband + telephone, so I'll leave it on, but there isn't a lot of English programming on it [Fox mainly]. The "set top box" supplied has an hd with good time-shift functions. It can record one program...

Which is the best image for the Vu+ Duo

Hi all; My new VU+ duo just arrived at my gate from Holland. This is all new to me, so I've been reading a lot of the forum here. It's very reassuring to see you're all very tolerant of stupid questions. Question; which image? Now I can see that the poll favors Black hole by far, but these...

Astra 1N tests - latest chat

Thanks a lot guys; I think this is drifting too far off topic, so when I get my questions more specific, I'll start a new thread. It seems to me I should use 320 stainless bolts instead of whatever they supply, and beef up the mount with some added steel sections. I get a sea breeze up on the...

Astra 1N tests - latest chat

Thanks; I don't have a problem so far because I don't have a dish yet! I've been trying to work out what to buy, but it's hard to get hard information it seems. I intend to put it all in myself; if necessary I'll get a pro to come do the fine tuning. I'm a hard-core DIY man. Aside from the...

What can I do to avoid the problem? I'm looking at buying a Famaval dish in the next few days. Those are made here in Portugal so are reasonably priced.
