Thanks Llew, that nailed it. I changed the LNB setting from "advanced" to "simple" and that fixed the problem. A scan then pulled in over 1000 stations. You're right, the "factory default" setting does seem to be for some utter bizarre configuration.

Ah ha! yes, that sounds right - thanks It does mean that my dish os too big, as the feedhorn beamwidth is calculated to be 133 degrees - so the feedhorn is only "seeing" 2.1 metres of the dish. :-(
