Does your sat finder have a gain control ? with those you are supposed to get the signal peeked up with the gain turned down as low as possible.
Otherwise youll be thinking that you've got a booming signal when it's just you pumping up the gain.

Correct, and just simply using a booster might not work either because too much noise will result in breakup, you cannot polish a bad signal through amplification.

First of all you need to makesure that they are not working on the transmitter, then try retuning your box.
Is your local transmitter grouped or is it wideband ? If you can use a grouped aerial youll achieve more signal gain (especially if your local tranny is an A group)
