Earlier today I meant to adjust the 80cm Visiosat at work to point to 19.2E for some UHD signal reception.
Simple 28.2E installaton for proof-of-concept in Copenhagen/DK
Having fetched the keys for roof access, I picked up the meter, some cable, some tools, and ventured onto the roof where all the dishes are.
Exiting the roof hut structure, I was immediately struck by the number of seagulls sitting or flying around, screaming slightly hysterically as they do. Hey-ho - animal sounds. Nothing major to worry about.
And they have been flying around a lot lately over the parking lot, hovering over us walking to the cars. No reason to worry. Just some stupid birds.
But upon rounding the corner, walking on the steel walkway to the dishes, the Seagulls became even more agitated as I have never heard them before. And approacing the actual dishes, the birds went nuts and started diving-in on me.
At this point I started having "uh-oh, WTF is this?" thoughts, and "hey aren't those birds getting a bit close on dives?"
That's when I saw the seagull chicks, waddling clearly frightened on the rubber roof underneath the steel walkway to try and get away from me.
At that very moment, the birds flying around (clearly the parents) started the Stuka assault.
First very close-calls where I could feel wings and feet brushing over my head.
Then the actual dive-bombing with droppings raining down around me.
At that point, I said "heck, UHD can wait!", and headed for the roof entrance door.
But before I could make it, I felt that sickening feeling of a direct hit to the back of the head and neck, spreading down the inside of my polo-shirt.
I just sooooo wanted to spin around and empty two full barrels at the bloody attackers, screaming "eat this, you SoB!".
Unfortunately, even Seagulls with chicks are off limits for "pest control".
There are laws in DK against harming bird-life as such.
I manged to slam shut the steel door to the angry birds.
It was borderline Hitchcock for a moment there...
To finish a long story: I managed to contain the damage to my polo-shirt (and head), and through the use of a shower and an old forgotten t-shirt I even finished the working day and got home (for another show and fresh clothes before going out to tdinner!).
Morale: If you respect legislation, and have dishes on a flat roof on the 5th floor, do you alignment early spring or late summer. Don't do it in June when the birds have chicks nesting on that very roof.
If you still need to adjust, bring rain-coats!
If you don't give a damn about legislation, bring a net, a taser, and a showel...
