All three possible targets for the high-band Astra 2B could make sense!
23.5 E that has no backup now
28.2 E to assist/replace the 2 years older 2A, and maybe take over 1N transponders
31.5 E to assist/replace the 3 years older 1G.
And next month should bring the 5B launch, intended for 31.5 E.

TLE #90 has Astra 2E at 42.06° East on 15 Jan at 01:24 UTC.
And right now at 41.6° East.
Moving West with 0.85° per day.
That would mean arrival at 28.2° East on 31 Jan.

But the fact is that 2E did indeed hold station until 1H arrived at 19.6E, and then started its own transit straight after.

It all seems highly convoluted, though!

And, for those interested in uncorroborated teasers, Member Huevos alluded to 2E doing temporary service at 31.5E. No idea what that was all about and no further information has been given.

I think it waited till after the golden globe 2014

Interesting, sounds like 2B is heading back east now that 1H is here. I wonder if she'll go back to 28.2E like people have suggested? 23.5E is a strong possibility considering there's no backup there but wasn't that a final destination for 2A following 2G's arrival at 28E? The plot thickens!

1H cannot be used for DTH, so that cannot be connected to 2B. I think those two problematic satellites 1L and 1KR have proven to be stable for now ( they didnt need to switch any transponders to 2B and now with 2E being operational within weeks, they are taking the risk and finally use 2B again for something - because they know 1N will soon be ready for 19.2 East.

My bet is, they are sending it back to 28.2 - 2A is very old, and 2E cannot replace both 1N and 2A.

Sounds viable - I'll have a Pony on that.

Doppler effect would change the RX frequency (which is variing anyway +- 100kHz or so) but that is due to the LNB oscillator. Maybe during movement the signal is broadcast in a slightly different mode.

Lots of news today! :)
Astra 2B new location is going to be 31.36 E.
From new center of box info, it will travel with 0.5° per day.
12° East, is 24 days, so arrival at 31.36 about 8 February.

What equipment do you use to hear the beacons?

I use an Icom Icr3 radioscanner. I connected it via a splitter to the LNB IF. You switch to a High Band vertical or horizontal channel, so the LNB gets the voltage plus 22kHz signal.
I also inserted an attenuator, to adjust the signal strength, to avoid overload from those strong "regular" transponders.

That should be well after 2E has arrived at 28.2E, this puts any rumours of 2E doing interim mission duties at 31.5E to bed as Heuvos's suggestion could have been reasonably plausible for SES if they needed backup there short term.
