Luxembourg, June 2nd, 2014 – SES S.A. (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announces that the ASTRA 5B satellite went live today at the orbital position of 31.5 degrees East over Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The spacecraft provides DTH (Direct-to-Home) as well as direct-to-cable services and contribution feeds to digital terrestrial television networks in its target markets.

ASTRA 5B was successfully launched by an Ariane 5 rocket from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guyana, on March 22nd, 2014. Since then, the spacecraft has successfully completed a number of in-orbit maneuvers and undergone a series of extensive in-orbit tests to confirm its flawless performance.

ASTRA 5B was built by Airbus Defence and Space Systems in Toulouse, France, based on the highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform. The satellite is equipped with 40 Ku-band transponders (36 MHz equivalent) and 6 Ka-band transponders. The spacecraft also carries the second SES hosted L-band payload for the European Commission’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS). EGNOS helps to verify, improve and report on the reliability and accuracy of positioning signals in Europe.

ASTRA 5B replaces ASTRA 1G at the orbital position of 31.5 degrees East, SES’s new video neighborhood for CEE, Russia and CIS. With ASTRA 5B the available capacity at that SES slot increases from 19 to 40 active transponders. The maneuver illustrates SES’s capabilities to successfully develop new orbital positions using spacecraft that have achieved their primary missions, until the orbital slot is supplemented with fresh, state-of-the-art satellite capacity.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES, stated: “In line with our well-defined strategy, ASTRA 5B greatly increases SES’s satellite capacities over CEE, Russia and the CIS. With the Operational Service Date (OSD) of ASTRA 5B, SES has as of today 1,536 active satellite transponders on its global satellite fleet, comprising 55 active spacecraft at 37 orbital slots around the world. We would like to thank our European partners at Airbus Defence and Space Systems and Arianespace for the successful ASTRA 5B mission.”

Getting a weak lock on 90cm Fibo on 11758H on the Uno - enough to scan... but not even locking on the F15.

Others are showing signs of life but no lock. Sadly, there are trees now in front of my 1.2m Fibo at my parents so no hope there...

dB values are hardly different from a few days ago, I don't think a switchover to 5B has taken place yet?

I find that SES's published footprints are not as accurate as Eutelsat's, so hopefully I'll get some unprinted side-lobe...

I think it has. Like @william-1 said, it's more stable. Here are my readings from 1G and 5B. BTW, who gets the Zeonbud MIS20 (T2-MI) at 11992H? The only FTA channel ZOOM is suffering from discontinuities.

If the change has taken place I can see very little difference
11758 H 27500 SQ 65%
11934 V 30000 SQ 60%

Others are showing a signal but not anywhere near enough to lock. Living in the south west I guess the signal drops away quite sharply hence not much
on any of the others.
These were taken from a Technomate with the 1.1 dish

dB v Signal Quality,

I just run a check with 2 receivers TM6900HD & DrHD D15 & arrived at this comparison:

TM6900HD ---DrHD D15
100% Quality= 21dB
90%----------= 18 dB
80%----------= 15dB
70%----------= 12 dB
60%----------= 9 dB
50%----------= 6dB
45%----------= 4.5 dB (At lower readings than this the picture breaks up.)

Things have happened last night!

The Magti Georgia transponders that were on the "impossible" 1G Eastern beam, must have switched to the 5B "High power Ku band beam". They are easy now: 11954H, 11973V, 12207H and 12266H.

The Anadolu Networks transponder 11817V, that also was on the 1G Eastern beam, can for the first time be locked here with about 5.0 dB. This must be the only one on the "Wide Ku band beam", that has a much sharper dropoff at the West side according the footprint maps.

There are currently 2 threads about Astra 5B. How about merging them? ;)

Something definitely happened.

Location: Bristol, South West England
Dish: 90cm Fibo (battered) connected to F15

11758H - 1dB no lock
11817V - 1dB no lock
11914H - 2.3dB no lock
11934V - 0.9dB no lock
11954H - 7.8dB no lock
11973V - 8.6dB no lock
11992H - 5.5dB no lock
12012V - 2.6dB no lock
12090V - 5.4dB no lock
12148H - 5.4dB no lock
12168V - 5.2dB no lock
12207V - 5.8dB no lock
12246V - 2dB no lock
12266H - 5.4dB no lock
12324V - 2dB no lock
12402V - 3.6dB no lock
12480V - 1.8dB no lock

I've no doubt I would pull most of these with a 1.2m dish here and I just tried my 1.2m behind the trees for this position but getting even less signal there...
