OK - I'll try to give the update a try - but the girls are watching Dr WHO right now - so I have to wait till later..

When I first tried to switch it on I did try a signal test - but it came up with no lock..?!
I prob need the update before it works..?

..and do I need to let it search for long to get a lock on 28..? ..and if not - could the box be locked somehow..?

SERVICES 4 - 6 when you're allowed....you should have lock. You need it. If you're getting BBC then your box is facing a bad prognosis.

Bugger :(

OK - just did the procedure - to no avail - unfortunately :-doh!

There is no lock at all - the Strength and Quality bars are just hanging there - moving forth and back - for 15 minutes now - and Not Locked laughing at me..

Could it be that this box is a special modified one..? I purchased it when we lived in Southsea - many years ago - so I suspect it has some build in features to prevent it from being utilized abroad - by some curious bloke..

I guess I have to contact Martin again - and have him ship me a card - and a box - iso just the card..

the box possibly has a shagged tuner. Grundig? Panasonic?
Anyway......they can't "rig" them to be not used abroad. There are so many of them off The Island ;)

yes - a Panasonic.. I agree - it may have gone to the 'eternal tuning fields'..

well - I'm just gonna go ahead splashing out on a new box too - just for the activation of the card - before I shove it into my dreambox - it's still a good investment for entertainment for the whole family..

Thanks for your advice - and Rolf too..

you no longer need the BOXID if you use the CCcam softcam. Just put it in and select CCcam (with NO CARDSERVER !) and it will work, including the updates.
the card needs to be activated, however, and this will only work in a genuine digibox, as rolfw said.

Fine..will try that when I receive my new card..
Which is now on the way towards my mailbox - and FYI this card is already activated upon receiving it - so I didn't need a skybox at all..

Buuuut - it still remains to be seen if I can just pop it into the DB slot - with no BOXID in the config - and with the CCcam..

Your box may not be completely beyond saving. Some Panasonics have a problem with certain makes of LNB. The Panasonic generates some spurious frequencies on the LNB power supply. The LNB see this interference and thinks that it is the 22kHz band switch tone and so keeps switching frequencies. If this is your problem, changing the LNB might do the trick. It is always worth testing your box on a friend's satellite dish to see if it really is the box at fault.

worst case - ask your "agent" as to the boxID it was activated in and is paired-to?

You still don't say what you've subscribed to? This can be quite important....

yes - I agree. The BOXKEY is a combination of the sky digibox serial number and the SKY card. It is unique and paired to the digibox which was used to activate it, the card will not work in any other digibox, and needs to be inserted in the correct digibox to receive the updates.
Furthermore, if another Sky Card would be activetad in that digibox, then your card would no longer get any updates any more, only the card which was last activated on any digibox gets the monthly updates, the others become FTV once the expiration date is reached.
This is why (normally) you can't get a Sky subscription without buying a digibox with it.
the dreambox will not need the BOXID (if you use CCcam) and will process the monthly updates, for as long as no new Sky Card gets activated on that digibox.

easysat,
You have a point - and I will try changing my LNBs - once the builders have reached the top of my house with a new balcony - because then I can stand nicely and mess at leisure myself with the dishes and what have we - iso having a sat-specialist crawling out of my roof window - and pay him for that..

Leee,
The card is a Standard Subscription card - purchased via the net, from a site that I know for a fact that at least Rolf knows very well - since he has referred to it somewhere else on this site - which in turn ended me up on that very site..
..once I find out if it's OK to link to the site here in the forum - I'll do that..

JTA,
It sounds perfectly sensible what you are saying - about having a skybox yourself - and I also tend to want that - but after conferring with the good guy who sells the stuff - I have decided to go ahead and trust him on this one..
Hey - if it doesn't work without the box - I'm sure he will sort it out.. One will not be very long time in business on the net - if one is not trustworthy..

Guys,
I have been abroad for a while..
Now - I've just got my new Sky Standard Viewing Card..
Popped it into the DB - selected CCcam - rebooted - and then tried e.g. Sky One..
No result..?!
I downloaded the CCcam and configs via bluepanel and install.. Did not transfer any keys via DCC..

You will most likely have a good laugh - but bear with me:
Does the card need to 'sit' in the DB slot for a while before it is being recognized via satellite signal..?
I still need to purchase a Sky package (monthly subscription) - don't I..?
And this I do online - on the Sky web site - right..?
What happens there..? Do I enter the sky card number etc..?

newcamd will work without modifications for a FTV card [that is already activated]
subscription cards and new FTV MUST be paired with a box [first] and if you have premium channels in your sub, you will have to edit betad.cfg and put the boxID of the paired box into that file.

OK - I was just informed by my 'agent' that I have a full premium subscription package already on the card - which is also activated..
I have the boxid and version - so I will now try to enter these details in the betad.cfg..

But in the betad.cfg file there is no box version entry - only the zeros for boxid - which I know I substitute with the real boxid..

Just to re-cap:
  1. insert sky viewing card into one of the smart-reader slots on the dreambox.
  2. download and install - via bluepanel (gemini 3.1) - newcamd6.10b - and cam config
edit betad.cfg:
SERIAL_PORT = 0 (topslot)
USER = local local
BOXID = xxxxxxxxxx (substituted with my boxid number)

re-boot dreambox
..and then I should be able to view from my sky viewingcard..

Is this correct - or is there more to it..?

yes; you should not even have to reboot, just restart emu.
oh and don't use notepad for the edit....it should not matter with this file but many DM linux files might stop working if you edit wrongly with notepad.

there is vi if you telnet to the box ;) :-rofl2
