Vu+ Solo is OK but if you can spare a little more cash, then the Uno is better, especially as you can convert it to twin tuner at a later date. It also has a faster processor than the Solo.
... or the Solo2 - twin tuner and current generation.

Yes, Solo2 is good too - but still a little expensive. It does have a blisteringly fast processor, so it will be a dream to use. Plus there are things on there that you cannot do on the Uno, such as on-the-fly transcoding if you want watch TV across the Internet.

Sure - when you manage to figure out how to set up the transcoding :D

I'm currently using Slingbox Pro HD with my SkyBox F3 and component is the best connection it takes so that is another reason why I'd like to stick to solo for now.

E2 linux stb,s can have a steep learning curve
Please don't believe this. My 4-year-old doesn't have any trouble operating the Ultimo, stopping and starting live tv, accessing recordings, skipping advert breaks, etc. The truth is these boxes can be as simple or as complicated as you want them to be.

Is the Uno still a current model?
Any suggestions on where to purchase one from?
My personal suggestion would be "World of Satellite".

And blindscan capable.

Solo is old hat now and doesn't have the resources to take full advantage of the latest images and plugins.

Clones are an even worse idea as they are not compatible with the latest kernel and drivers, so you won't have access to bug fixes, updates, etc. And as the latest images require the most recent kernel/drivers you won't have access to these either.

Ah! Has never worked for me.... It always crashes out when I try it.
The hardware is blindscan capable, but there has been teething trouble so far with software, but I'm pretty sure it will get sorted in the long run. Uno, Ultimo and Duo2 all blindscan fine on current kernel/drivers, with both single or twin tuner cards.

Depends on the slope of your roof but at least 2 meters - get a larger one and you can cut off any excess.

No knowledge of Linux is necessary and FTP is just an extra, not something that you have to use. That argument is like saying don't buy a new laptop unless you're a computer programer.

50 metres is a long way and you are going to suffer with considerable cable loss over that distance. I would suggest that you spend wisely and buy WF125 cable (RG7) with the correct sized connectors and reduce to WF100 cable for the last 1.om or so to connect up to your receiver.

I have over 60m on my longest run to the motor with a break in it joined with a f barrel connector, about 40 meters of it is 20 year old RG6 cable.

Any RG6 cable will do. Be sure to remove the flap of foil and spread the braid around evenly to ensure good shielding.

I have a Triax 110 on the motor above the gutter here on a K T K, I forgot to update my details. Triax 110 are exceptionally robust dishes it is unfortunate that the elevation is a pain. But set it up right and it is solid in the worst winds up here.

I'm not saying you won't get a picture with lesser (cheaper) cables, but over that distance I calculate an approximate loss of 3.7dB between RG6 & WF125 just in the cables. Add in other factors and that could make a big difference when you're trying to pick up a channel, especially in the rain. Good planning, good installation & money well spent initially could save problems & more money in the future. ;)

Digital signals are very simple they are a two phase signal a 1 or 0 modulated on a carrier wave. The addition of error correction makes them very robust so the tuner does not need a very strong signal.

The output gain from the Inverto Black Ultra is very high at 50-60dB so it will easily overcome any loss in the cable.

Couldn't go wrong with Webro RG6, it has a good thick jacket.
