15ft up in the air, i'm pleased your neighbours are okay with this. You'd never get away with that around here----lots of dogooders poking their nose just where it doesnt belong. You're going to get some serious windloading on that, thats going to test your welds Martin. Looks right smart so far though.:-applause
I have planning permission to put it there paul, but my neighbours are great people and we all help each other as it should be, mainly me helping them with been able to turn my hand to most things:-lol,
My welds will be fine there is enough room for error with the size of box section I am using;), thanks pal :)

How did you manage to get planning permission for it? Was it a pain?

It can be very easy to get permission if you have a suitable place for one like myself, i offered two plans one ground mounted central in the garden, and the 15ft pole option close to the wall, I wanted the second option and it all came off, i will post pictures of the first inspection when i install the pole.

Just taking a look at the weight 1.5 gib weighs 7.5Kg 1.8 CM 47.5kg, you might understand my concern a little more .
Spherical joints are brilliant. Reason you haven't seen them here is they are overkill on a satellite polar mount when you can get away with just a brass bush or no bearing at all. I used to use them on the end of the drive bars on a race car and never had a failure when pushing a 500kg car to 225Km/h in 9 seconds.

Very nice. What do you cut the metal with? Don't say a hand hacksaw...

Just remembered where I used to see Spherical joints. I used to test engine oils for MoD. We had engines mounted on a test bed with dynamometers to provide engine load. Long story but the load cells (device that measures how much load is applied to engine) were attached to frame by a spherical joint at each side. Basically a single spherical joint was able to take 750Nm (over 550ft lb) of torque and 230Kw of power!!!!!!

Can't find a good photo, it's a few years ago now. This one is from video. At the end of that drive bar is a quality 3/4" by 3/4" spherical joint.4097_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0.jpg

If I was to use something like that I would use a track rod end, but all my plates are made now, all moving parts are accessible, so its not hard to replace any part if it wears but thanks lads,

I thought you wanted something strong. That's just a puny little steering joint.

So anyway what are you going to use for a bearing?
