AFAIK there's no such thing.

All the Irish terrestrial channels on Astra 2 need a Sky subscription to be viewed.

That's just Ireland for you.
Companies like sky cando as they wish.
Wait till cameron trashes all the regulating bodies (quango hacking) we'll have a good few years hitching before we get back to real service.
Problem in Ireland is that the politicians are useless and people are used to it.

Much as I enjoy a good bout of Sky kicking, in this case I think it's down to the Irish TV authorities.

Won't have any effect. Ireland is a sovereign nation unaffected by UK legislation, regulation or deregulation.

A FTV card registered to a Northern Ireland address will get you RTE1 /RTE2. wont get TV3 though.

Anytime RTE broacasts something where Sky has the broadcast rights for UK the card is blocked for the duration of the transmission, IE when RTE2 is showing live champions league games. On the very odd exception someone forgets to flick the block switch and you can view but as I said its very rare.

Your just lucky then, what I have said is correct.

My mates card opens all on Sky UK channels though its supposed to be a basic package, Sky would phone him up to get him to upgrade lol he just said no each time. when the new white cards came out I thought he may loose his movies and sport but its still working away.

And I second what PaulR says.

It seems clear from Post #8individual and specific the card referred to is anomalous in many ways and isn't representative of mainstream.

RTE 1, RTE 2 and several others FTA on satellite (non-sky) is on the way in second quarter 2011 - it is to accommodate the 2% of the population that wont be able to receive DTT.

Its going to be called Saorsat - which you guessed it means "freesat" in Irish.

It will be on a new satllite being launched the end of the year so it wont be 28e.

AFIK there is no free satellite in thr Republic so to get Irish State channels which are NDS encrypted some sort of Sub to Sky is required. This is not the case if you live in Northern Ireland. You will get RTE 1 and RTE 2 with a Northern Ireland FTV card or an ex Sky Sub card that has lapsed and then becomes FTV.

Then "we" is wrong!

You need a Northern Ireland FTV card. No sub required. No monthly payment £0 per month.

I don't think there is any ambiguity in what I'm saying.

Getting RTÉ thru Sky and the rooftop aerial! The world cup was shown on RTÉ after some earlier games being blocked at the start. Think now if the same thing is on ITV and RTÉ it is not blocked. RTÉ showed a football match last night which was on MUTV as well.

Does anybody know about RTÉ's plans for a Freesat type service. I have read a few posts online but not sure if they are all true. If they were to use a new sat at 9E and a spotbeam onto the 'island' of Ireland would it mean a having very small dish?

From what Ive seen (and its not official info Ive seen yet so take this with some caution) they will be using Eutelsat Ka-Sat which will slot at 9E in the year. They will use Ka band not Ku band. Now Ka-Sat will have multiple (80+) spotbeams so the coverage areas and downlink powers are open to discussion.

However I guarantee frequency reuse between the spots will make distant reception of other beams impossible.

I have seen that somwhere will find the link! They are using the 9E slot and a spotbeam to prevent the signal from reaching GB and even Belfast!
