Step 1:
use Tux Commander to locate the passwd file ( location: /var/etc/passwd)
I have two passwd lines:
one with a little dot just after the d and one without.
does this make any sense?
another question: could the user name have been changed as well?

Just checked and I didn't find one.

You didn't find it because you didn't write it yet :-rofl2

Go on, do the right thing :-righton

1) You must use (passwd) and not the one with the minus sign (passwd-)
2) User can be any name but not root of course (I have added a list below of names not to be used)

To make it more clear what each character means on the line:

(1) . . . (2). . (3) (4) . (5) . . . . (6) . . . . . (7)
root : ***** : 0 : 0 : root : /home/root : /bin/sh

(1) Login in Name .... <User Name>
(2) Encrypted Password ... <if empty then no password>
(3) User Id
(4) Group Id
(5) Comment Field ... <put same as user_name or anything else>
(6) Home Directory for User ... <Keep same as original>
(7) Command Interpreter ... <Init execute, if left empty by default /bin/sh>

List of names not to use:

root, daemon, bin, sys, sync,
games, man, lp, mail, news, uucp,
proxy, www-data, backup, list, irc,
gnats, nobody

Cheers

If you change your password your CS may stop working.

What image are you using? And welcome to the forum :)

I'm running version 3.60 as of 31 May 2007 (it's damn old!)

Will flashing my image with 4.20 (the safe image for my Fake D:cool: render my CS useless?

Why do you want to change to 4.20? Is 3.60 stable or are you having any problems with it?

If you reflash without backing up the relevnat config files you will lose CS and if your CS provider has remote access to your box they will not be able to access your box.

Thank you
my problem is finally solved.
You have provided the Dreambox with an alternative login/password possibility.

Glad to hear your problem solved.

Some things I forgot to mention before when creating a new user:

1) The user name must be at least one character to a maximum of eight characters long.

2) If web interface has a password you cannot log into it with the new user, so you have to disable the password from the web interface plugin on the dreambox or follow number (3) below for alternative.

3) To login as a root user and keep original follow this steps below:

Do not
delete the original root line, instead put the hash key (#) in front of it (this comments it out) make a copy of it underneath and remove password.

Eg.
# root:*******:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh < Original line >
root::0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh <New line >

*Optional -- Use telnet and login as user root and put your own password. This will allow you to also connect via web interface using root as user and your password. (might have problem with CS provider connecting remotely, haven't tested it yet)

To put back original root line just remove the second line you put or rename user to another name and remove the hash key on the first line.
Also do this for the file passwd-

4) To clear your tracks of adding a second user (so you don't get into trouble with your provider) do the following:

Remove the second user from the file passwd, (make sure original line is there and does not have a hash character in front!!!)
Remove the second user also from file passwd- (check if its there also)
Go to folder /var/log on the dreambox
there should be a file called vsftpd.log (edit it and remove all text inside it or clear lines which match the date you messed around)

Then close ftp/tuxcom connection to dreambox

5) Import, this modifying is at your own risk!!! Do not hold me or the site responsible if something goes wrong or damage occurs on your dreambox.

If someone is going to write up an idiots guide, use post 26 to indicate what each parameter on the line stands for and also state that you don't need to reset the password but can also add a new user to gain access.

Thank you

Shutdown the receiver and try again.

Hi.

I am in the same position as the people in this thread. I have an eagle linux box (dreambox 500 clone) and my FTP password has been changed. I also cannot install any plugins from the blue menu as I am locked out from this too, so this rules out the tuxcom plugin. I need to know the FTP password without reflashing the box, as I have my cardshare config files on them which i do not want to lose.
The firmware on the box is DDdemon by rockydevil.
Is there anyway to get into the box without resetting the password? If there are methods which cannot be posted on the forum, could you PM me these methods.

Really need to get this done asap.
Thanks

Can't think of any other way, except trying to guess the login and password (you have to take into consideration that they changed also the login and not only the P/W)
Look for password cracking software.

If it was that easy to crack the username/password for Linux, it would render Linux as a totally unsecure operating system, which it is not. If you are not using a payserver, then reflash the box. If you are using a payserver, me, and I think this whole forum, have no sympathy with you as payservers are destroying our hobby.
