SES 5 at 4.9°E has a tighter Nordic beam than the older Astra 4A. It would be useful to know just how good or bad the reception is of this satellite is, so if you have a moment to let us know how your reception is I'll compile a Google map (similar to the Astra 28°E ones).

For everyone who wants to take part we need some basic information:

Your location to the nearest town
Your dish size and receiver
What sort of reception you are getting

The only frequencies we are interested in are:
11265 H 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11265 V 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11305 H 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11305 V 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11345 H 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11345 V 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2
11385 V 30000-3/4 8PSK DVB-S2

Please note only DVB-S2 compatible (HD) receivers can pick up these frequencies. If you can't pick up HD channels please do not send in a report. All the channels are encrypted in the Viasat package but you may get audio from the NRK channels on 11305V.

Thanks.

Some SAT-related hardware.
My Location
N-E from Riga
Measured yesterday from ~120cm dish where 13*E in focus and 4,8*E in multifeed (so, probably, equivalent of 90cm in focus).

Thirsk (YO7)

1.1m Dish
Black Ultra

All relevant TPs :

Horizontals SS 89; SQ 70 (Rock solid)
Verticals SS 89; SQ 45-65 (Rapid fluctuations)

APART from 11386 V (The only one with only a single Polarity) which is also SQ 70 (Rock solid).

I think this tells me a little about the cross-polarisation rejection of the Black Ultra .............

Seperate 80 cm dish on 28E with a Humax Freesat for SWMBO.
Free Sat V8 meter. Sony Bravia 46" LCD, Sony BluRay and Home Cinema.
My Location

Zero reception on all frequencies

Penta 85cm dish....focused on 9E.......Black Ultra LNB...

Can try with 1.2M dish tomorrow but I suspect there will be the same results.

Hmm something funny going on there. Maybe you need to tweak the skew a little?

Do I file this as a positive report?

Skew is zero at 1.3W (ie Perfect!) >> H-H Motor gives perfect tracking across my visible arc.

As I say, I think the issue is to do with Cross-Polarisation Rejection.

I think you can safely take the stable readings as positive and extrapolate them to treat the unstable ones as stable (ie The deficiency is local to my system, not to the Footprint) ^_^

Well, I suppose the chances are you living in a freak null are slim. ;) Just another thought, do SES use a weird skew at 5E like they do elsewhere?

My Village has been known by many names, but Freak Null isn't one of them ! :D

I might even get around to switching to the 80cm tomorrow, to see if it can sniff owt out.

Interesting that the difference between H and V on the same frequency is significant and bears comparison with my own report above. Especially as the singleton V is tenable, as was also the case with mine. And Mickybod is using a Black Ultra too (albeit a Quad, to my Twin)

And yet Pontiend's results are consistent between H and V and he's only a stone's throw away and is also using a Black Ultra!

That seems to destroy my LNB performance theory and (assuming all three of us are satisfied our Installations are as well set up as we'd like) might instead suggest that the Footprint edge differs between H and V. But then why the anomaly of 11385 V?

Just had a look this morning to check.
Signal is down a bit.
They are all 71 or 72% 11345h is 70%

Edit Looking at the footprint that gibertini posted you may be a little father west of the edge of the footprint to me.
:oops:Probably wrong that I thought that you were farther north.

Results from my 80cm Dish (As promised)

Conditions overcast with rain droplets on the LNB.

ZILCH!

1.1m in these conditions gives results very close to earlier report.

1.2M Laminas motorised dish...Black Ultra LNB...DrHD F15.....clear with broken high cloud...(location as before)

11265H 0.7dB
11265V 1.8dB
11305H 0.8dB
11305V 1.8dB
11345H 0.8dB
11345V 1.7dB
11385V 1.9dB

All these results are well below the level required by the F15 to produce a lockable signal on a FEC of 3/4
