1.5 Precision dish install

If I ever used the sun to find due south I would still move the dish to check so its pointless to me, I do quite well with the 1.2 so I will stick to lining up as I do, first scan with the 1.5 and I am locked on to 1 W :)

We all have our own preferred methods Martin ...though the fact that you would move the dish to check after alignment using the sun .._suggests_ a lack of trust in the Earths rotation ..and Solar Zenith..

You would be a poor installer if you had to rely on it ;), my method works and I match most peeps in the uk with my 1.2 dish so i cant be doing much wrong:)

Cant argue with your logic ...certainly in the UK ...as clear days with unobscured sunlight are infrequent and at a premium here..
If you relied on this method totally you wouldn't get many installs done..
That said ..it is extremely accurate and adds another satisfying string to ones bow...

VS, wouldn't relying on the sun's shadow mean that you literally have minutes to get it aligned? The Earth moves pretty quick around the said star...

Yes ..you have to be totally prepared ...but only one adjustment to be made at Zenith ..so moments is all it takes ..
You are only rotating the whole assembly E/W on top of a pole ..then locking it up ..

..When I used this method on Christina ..the only thing I used besides my eyes and a spanner ...was a phone (listening to the speaking clock).

It's looking good.

Just a quick question, those feed support arms with the extension rods on the 1.5m dish seem to be quite a bit short before the extensions were added. Are these the arms from the 90cm Precision or did you cut back the original arms from the 1.5m dish?
 
Hi, I only managed to line the holder up and pop the lnb in today, after earlier posts I feel the need to explain my reasons for doing the lnb mod this way,

A proper bought C band holder takes the lnb slightly out of focal distance and cant be adjusted to its correct position without cutting the dish arms down, don't get me wrong its not far away but I am going to town on this dish and want it tweaked to precision :),

Another reason is for multi lnb , doing it as ive done allows me more options where to install lnbs ,

As for having the scalar attached to the lnb in a normal manner the option is there this can act as a holder as well as a scalar depending how I adjust it, so it can be a two in one/two holding points, it also allows lots of options for experiments in the future.;)I few more pictures.

Martin, I have been playing with my cband lnb, and found quite a difference between having the lnb the correct way 0° at the bottom and the 0° at the top.

I mean I picked up a lot more stuff with the 0° at the top.

Looking good there now, won't be long before you get to chase the c-band :-)
 
Thanks Chris i will give it a go :), Its not in a set position it was only popped into the holder, ive got to put it where it works best with the plate in until my other gear turns up :).

I have a question about the elongated nuts that you have used to connect the threaded rods to the LNB support arms and the ones welded at 90 degrees at the scalar ring end of the feed support arms.

Do you know if these elongated nuts are available with different internal thread sizes at each end? I have a mini project that may require connecting an 8mm thread linearly to a 12mm thread and these elongated nuts might do the job if they are available in a version with different gauge threads at each end?
 

This reminds me of my first experiments with C Band on my Precision 1.2 many years ago now. I was using a voltage switching Yuri LNB and also I think it was a BSC621 combi LNB, C band was good but KU awful. Not as good as yours though Martin, just bits I could find in the workshop.

Nice work scopus :) its better than a bought one:) as you know from your mod it throws the lnb out, I will try a few scans a little later and see if I can get my first C band signal, if i get the chance.
