If it wasn't connected to the glory days of the Paris-Dakar most of the competitors and manufacturers wouldn't turn up. Certainly the current host country wouldn't be interested, it would just be another rally raid no one cares about. Perhaps the competitors believe it will one day return to Senegal and their names will be in the history books as winners of the historic event.

There is a rally raid called the Africa Eco Race which does finish in Dakar, even though it sticks to the coastal areas it makes a mockery of the official 'Dakar' rally and the reasons it no longer races in Africa.
