hello
there was a big drop in signal on astra 1N today.
about 11 am we where looking at something on a 2 meter dish and all the 1N droped out for about 2 or 3 min.
then the signal came back up and all the freeview locked back in.
sunspots???
anyone know??

Well theres your explanation - only the marginal signals were affected today.

Whats affected depends on the relative placing of the sun and the satellites, and the received downlink power at any location.

It was a 4.2m prime focus dish & the only transponder we could lock on with Promax Explorer was 10788V.
Due to bad weather we only had chance to work on one dish so far and achieved the above result...(was raining at the time we took the measurement and although we got a picture, it was pixelating now and again)
The weather is clearing up now so hopefully next week we'll get a chance to work on more dishes to get a better idea...BUT i am not very optimistic...signal is not as healthy as 2D was.
My observation is that unlike 2D where we had only Horizontal Tp's, 1N has stronger Verticals Tp's available to us.(hence BBC1 W Midlands channel in the pic which we never got before)

I wonder if that's because BADR at 26E don't have a transponder on that frequency ,so no interference?

I doubt it very much because i did get a considerable improvement in the BER when i applied the same "interference blocking" technique i was using on 2D.

So I won't throw away my left over "blockers" then ;-)

No.........But you might have to relocate them (that is, if you get enough signal to need them) :)

Iceman, Zorba and all other cyprus dx-ers,
would you please tell us what feedhorn you are using with your big prime focus dishes
I guess It Is better than Invacom ADF-120
I am looking for a good feedhorn for my prime focus dish
Iceman how good Is sensitivity of DM800se tuner compared to DRX890c and your other receivers
I have heard that BCM4505 tuners are with very good sensitivity

Samoloko, if you are using a 1.8m dish then it's just not going to be big enough in Bulgaria for 1N no matter what feedhorn you use. From reports 1.8m is marginal in Budapest which is quite a bit further west than Bulgaria.

I have friends in central Serbia watching 1N with 150 prime focus...Serbia & Bulgaria is not too far apart so its worth a try.

I use the invacom feed on the 4.2m primo focus dish...There are larger feeds on the market, but since the invacom does the job for me, i dont use them.
The tuner on the DM800se is by far the best dreambox tuner i have used (i used every model except DM8000 but apparently that also has a sensitive tuner)
Its slightly better than the DRX890 tuner..

Well it's always worth a try!

But it's known that 1N has a very sharp cutoff at its edges and if you take a line roughly down through Budapest and central Serbia that makes eastern Bulgaria nearly 200km away. Taking an example up in Scandinavia, Stockholm is on the edge for reception and by the time you've gone 200km to Finland across the Gulf of Bothnia there's no signal to speak of.

And if Samoloko is not on the eastern border of Bulgaria we could be talking of up to 600km away.

thank you for reply
Isn't Invacom too small for such a large dish - what f/d got your 4.2 Channel Master
I have read that large cyprus feedhorns give better results than Invacom ADF-120
Also I have read that Invacom Is not so well performing In low Ku band
Dreambox plug and play BCM4505 tuners seem to be best In linux based receivers

I live In west Bulgaria and people here can lock Astra 1N with 2 m prime focus dishes
