2.4 dish for Ibiza

My Satellite Setup
1980s 1.5m offset dish, single output black ultra on a homemade sturdy mount, getting all channels 24/7 from sky with a pace digibox but no subscription so only bbc1,2 itv etc.

Wanted
A 2.4m decent dish for 2d in Ibiza, i can pick up from mainland spain or uk or ballaerics.
 
what would you recommend?

And remember things will change when the new Astra 2 satellites and their multiple spotbeams start coming into service in 2012 - you may well find you need something bigger at that point for even more channels :D
 
I had a look and 2.4 seems to be big enough, however I have no idea what the new multiple spot beams are and what they will mean footprint wise. Can you advise?

Maybe I should wait for google tv and just get the internet!
 
1) According to that dish size map I linked to Ibiza is outside the 2.4m contour. Therefore chances are it will work ok on a nice day, but things may disappear during bad weather.

2) We dont know until the new satellites start coming into service. However it is certain more channels will move to UK spotbeams as all three new satellites will be equipped with spots.

However seeing as beam shaping technology has improved greatly since Astra 2D was built I guarantee its not going to be good news for expats in some areas. The downlink power drop off is bound to be sharper at the edges than it is now..
 
thanks for the nod on that, it would seem daft to shell out for a 2.4 or even 3m dish if it could be useless in a couple of years. Do you know if sky broadcast any english programs on other satelites, even if they were subscription packages? I wouldn't mind paying if I could get some decent channels. I have a 1.5 dish already and am able to recive hotbird, other astra's and loads more but have no idea what is available.
 
Sky Italia or Sky Germany will be possible but the channel line ups will be different. You wont get a lot of the UK entertainment channels, and no BBC ITV C4 etc on those. You will get a lot of the Discovery / Nat Geographic type stuff.
 
looks like I will have little choice but wait and see what happens with 2012 or alternativly internet tv.

Is it an offset dish? If you have a 1.5m and a free to view card you can easily get ITV1, C4, C4+1 and C5. You should be able to get BBC1 CI, which is FTA, no problem on a 1.5m along with ITV2/3/4, more 4, E4, etc. The only thing you are going to get extra with a big dish is part time BBC2.
 
yep, im back in the uk at the moment so from memory its definately offset with an inverto quad c120 lnb. I have a technomate 5200b box, the one with the usb, and a sky digibox with fta card. With the technomate box it is currently picking up the astra south beam (good for cnn and bbc world but thats about all thats on the south beam) but if I switch to the north beam I get nothing.
I am not really a techie so don't know if I should be adjusting anything else like transponders etc or if the dish needs fine tuning. the tecnomate has a signal recieved indicator that seems pretty acurate and shows change even if I twist the lnb slightly, but I still don't get anything from the north beam. I would be more than happy with those channels you mentioned above

What dish is it? Normally an offset dish doesn't use a C120 LNB.

Sounds like the dish is well out of alignment. With a 1.5m dish you should easily get north beams and 2D verticals.
 
not sure what dish it is, its one peice plastic, it came with a c120 mount and works fine on all the other satellites up there! just wont pick up the north beam. what are 2d verticles?

BBC1, ITV2/3/4, plus a few other channels that are normally easier to receive off the north or south beams. I get BBC1 fine here on a 1.5m dish so you should be able to as well.
 
i am going to look a bit thick here so sorry in advance-
do you meen that bbc1 itv2/3/4 are the verticles and are available on both north and south beams?

No. I mean those channels are only available on 2D verticals (or horizontals which are even harder to receive). 2D is 2D, it's nothing to do with the north beams or the south beams.

ITV1 and channel 5 are on the south beams. Channel 4, 4+1, E4, More 4 are on the north beams.

BBC2 is on 2D horizontal only, and would be part time at best with a 2.4m dish.
 
Still a bit unsure what a verticle is (is it the way the signal is beamed ie longditudanal over the uk?), but I am hoping then that when I get back to Ibiza mid October I should be able to recieve ITV and channel 5 on the south beam, maybe with a bit of fine tuning of the dish/lnb. Again, I would be pleased with those 2 channels!
 
It is the polarisation of the transmitted signal, similar to your TV aerial on the roof, the prongs either lay flat or point vertical.

Consult lyngsat.com and you will see a list of the transponders, their frequencies and polarisation.

On the front page, look in the table, and select this box

You will then see a list of a lot of the eastern satellites

Find 28.2E, and you can click on Astra 2D to see the transponders on that

or just click on 28.2E, to see all the TPs at 28.2 _http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

Look at the list, on the LHS are the frequencies,together with polarisation and symbol rate, then it shows what channels each TP carries.
