I also want to know what they are built like and how they perform and if they are any good for Astra 2D in Eastern Mediteranean. Them laser dishes :)

I must dissapoint you once again. I've still got no news about the 4m project West of Thessaloniki. The only thing i know for sure is that the flat roof had to be changed that this monster of dish will not harm the house. It's a region with strong northerly winds in winter time and the weight is another factor. The weather this year doesn't help either to work on that. Too much rain. So please be a little patient. I'm sure he will post here when it's finished.

The dish is not only for Astra 2D. This spotbeam behaves really crazy and you cannot predict which frequencies you might get. From his location the Horizontals can be received all on 2.40m just 40km SW (Veria) but 20km to the East (Thessaloniki) even a 3m does not get a sniff of any. 350km to the North (NW Bulgaria) a 1.80m can get all Verticals but no Horizontals. 680km SE (Rodos) on 3m you can get also the Verticals but no Horizontals. So you see it's pure luck if you will get something or not.

Besides that, this guy is a real DXer and wants the optimum of C+Ku Bands and not just Astra 2D which will be changed some time. The region is flat, so he can get the maximum from 55.5W-100.5E. The mount of the dish will show if this is possible or not.
 
When Astra 2D is ending it's service? Which will be the next "the most talked about" satellite? Is there any news out there?
 
Well i suppose i don't know more than you bite. Astra 2D was launched in 2000 and the supposed lifetime is 12 years. If SES Astra will set it out of order in 2012 i don't know. Even about Astra 2E i haven't heard anything. But this question should better be discussed in a separate thread. Maybe somebody has reliable information about the future Astra 2 satellites.

Paolo, the 4m dish can not be erected yet, because the roof of the house is not ready yet. He's awaiting the ok from the local authority in mid of May. And since this is a greek authority it might take longer, hope not. If so, don't expect before June any results. So he's got the dish there but cannot install it.

Nice dish park Rick. You've got plenty of space there but i am aware about the difficulties in satellite reception from NZ. Many beams don't even reach you, others are extremely weak and a big part of your viewable arc (177W-148W) has no geostationary satellites. But it could be much worse having in mind the Southern Indian Ocean. I don't wanna get too OT here but may i ask in which board you're posting any reception reports ? Vetrun or anywhere else ?

That's not the lifetime, it's the minimum lifespan. If the satellite doesn't live to 12 years old SES Astra would receive a payout. That's my understanding anyway. If it's got fuel on board and is still working ok in 2012 why would it be sent to the graveyard?
 
Sorry wrong expression. That's why i added "If SES Astra will set it out of order in 2012 i don't know." Might be that it will work longer, maybe the next satellite will take over the frequencies and move 2D to another position, who knows for sure..

Fortunately there are plenty of other interesting satellites. Otherwise DXing would be much less interesting.
