Good afternoon from a warm but overcast Mullion Cove.

Alanna and I have just spent four days replacing the stand off brackets for the satellite dishes mast.

There were three in all, but the top one was custom made.

I have had the new ones galvanised.

The old brackets which are 550 I think were good and strong but the SSS powder coating is useless in sea air.

I had given them an additional coat of roofing gunk, but the water still got through.

On the plate of one as pictured, I scrapped off the gunk and what little was left of the powder coating.

I then gave it a quick rub with a file and wire brush no more than a few minutes.

This is to show that there is good metal there.

I would imagine that there is rust all over both brackets under the black coating.

£139 including carriage for the two, they are £224.95 inc carriage from SSS.

You do get clamps from them as well.

I will include the old clamps if you wish, they also require de-rusting.

I have allowed £40 for carriage by Parcelforse, but if it is less I will refund the difference : )

I shall leave then on here for a week, then add them to eBay as well.

Pictured Alanna removing some bolts : )

Eh ?
Powder coating should be fine in a marine environment.

How long it lasts depends on the base material preparation, quality of application, curing (if any) and potential damage during storage, carriage and installation.

Did they look 'shiney shiney' when they were delivered ?

Yes I think they were very shiny Channel Hopper, it was a few years ago.

The SSS powder coating on all my brackets did not protect them, so something was wrong ?

I have no other experience of powder coating as far as I know.

On the side of the brackets that was fixed to the wall, the powder coating had peeled off and was all flaky and loose.

I put that down rightly or wrongly due to it cracking on the rough wall surface as the fixing bolts were tightend ?

But as I cleaned that part today, I also scrapped further down the arm ( see third image ) and under the powder coating is rust.

So water has got in underneath.

Mine maybe a one off, but I have read of other cases of SSS pole adaptors rusting, on this forum I think.

My reason for posting this is so that others will know that galvanising is also an option with SSS.

Galvanising offered as an option ?

A test on the steel (that remains) will provide clues on the longevity claims of the outer coating. Bolting to a rough surface might allow penetration but not over the full surface unless fully submerged for decades.

I only know what I see Channel Hopper.

If the surface coating was not as it should have been, I assume that as soon as the water got under the surface in one spot, is would be a matter of capillary action.

Maybe its not all over both the brackets, but on the parts that fix to the wall it has flaked off, and the arm where I scraped it is all rusted.

My experience with paint is limited to stone and wood on our building : )

Many years ago in Manchester 1969, we painted a M1 Jaguar white with Valspar two to four hour paint, the car only cost £30 with a faulty clutch.

There was a large white rectangle on the road for ages afterwards : ))

If you measure the thinnest and thickest parts of the metal remaining on the bracketry it will give a guide on how much they have degraded.

It is just the surface they look as thick as the new ones
