An old article from the Telesat magazine i found on the net on some forum about the German guy who lives in Brazil that receives Astra and Hotbird with his homemade 8m dish on the roof.

Look at attached document.

Wow! I read the article (as I speak German), but anyone who can build his own motorised dish like this should get a satellite equivalent of the Nobel price!

He can pick up 26e digital channels inc an HD channel. This info comes from Dr Dish, as of this year.

Do you know how he made his dish, what material is it made of, and so on???

Do you know, that it was (is) possible to receive Astra (back then it was 1:cool: in Cape Town , South Africa with BUDs (big ugly dishes :)).
I think they call it a SIDELOBE.

Unless you are willing to put an 800cm dish on the roof of your new apartment theres no chance whatsoever of getting any of the main European channels in Brazil.

(Even 8m wont give you much choice from Astra 1!!)

Theres no way of knowing until someone tries it. Mr Schumacher may just have a slight lobe of favourable reception in his location. In such extreme fringe reception conditions all bets are off until someone builds such a monster.

Actually Mr Schumacher stays near Sea and in that area there is absolutely no obstacle that's why the signal reaches him,

In Kerla INDIA also Hotbird signal is 100% as its on the western side and in Sea area people get the same on 6 feet dish

And from above video, I don't see mister Schumaher getting hotbird at all. I can see he complaining that he can't get hotbird, and asking people to help, and also he's being getting only analog channels from Astra?

Yes divibi, Even I am confused and amazed how come people down south are getting satellites which we never received in North India.

They are able to get Full hotbird 8,9 & some transponders of HB6 & with side LNB they are getting 26E & 9A. This is very confusing for me and other sat hunter:-rofl2

I can only Understand one thing is common in Kerla and mr Schumacher both are staying near SEA and I think the sat signal can be blocked by Mountains and other atmospheric attenuation where as SEA does not block the signal at all.

As Kerla is on Western side of INDIA and is surrounded by sea, so NO LAND obstacle between West and Kerla.

Hey Moradabad. Thanks for the map:-worship. Very impressive! What sort of dish sizes are we talking about for the side LNB setup you put as an example?

You know what, Mr Schumi with his 8 metre dish actually lives in more like southern Brazil, close to Argentina and Paraguay- even more impressive.

You are right; being near the sea helps and personally, I think that being close to the equator helps as well! And Karelia is almost on the equator.

I've got a question for you. In KARELIA can you get INTELSAT 7 , 68.5 E
KU Band (South Africa beam) with FTA channels like Botswana TV?
I think that, after the Maldives, Karelia is the most favourable place to receive this beam, as the footprint is heading staright towards India.
Thank you in advance.

Hi BombedOne,

Yeah, the information side of those videos could have been better, to say the least.
I think Mr Schumi used to receive ANALOGUE Hotbird channels, because he says something like: "let me tell you sth, I watched many films on Hotbird"??? And he USED TO get ANALOGUE Astra channels.

But with digital, my understanding is he only gets one transponder and it's not really watchable. In a video about LNB cooling it is mentioned that he needs 1.5 dB or 2 dB more signal for happy viewing.

And he said he got Arabsat channels, including an HD channel.

In Kerla even they are getting Atlantic bird @1 Degree I am not sure about 68.5 KU .

this is great.
back in 1973 i was on a montain mount hebo oregon.
we had a radar there AN-FSS7 that had gun diodes as part of the first stage amplifier.
this was siting in liquid heloum thast kept the first stage amp cool.
i don't remember the temp but it was probally -100 c for sure.
if he was able to keep this cooler it would work like a champ.
WOW i am impressed.

The map is incorrect - satellites sit on geostationary (equatorial) orbit. so Mr. Schumaher is (physically) more closer to Astra, than any German resident :)
