My Satellite Setup
No sat set up yet. Mac OS X.
My Location
Ascension Island, SAO
Hello... I am writing from Ascension Island. I am trying to get some tv service down here since there isn't much of any. Can anyone recommend a complete hardware set up? I am looking primarily for English speaking premium or fta channels. A friend of mine has an old starcruiser 9000 receiver and a pizza box, but has not had much luck other than picking up some fta nilesat channels.

It has been many years since I dabbled in the world of sat tv, and so much has changed.

The receiver would need to be compatible with NTSC SD tv.

Thanks!

Getting Nilesat would not be a terrible start theres a handful of English speaking programmes from there. What sized dsh has your friend got? Arabsat might be worth a go too.

I know in the Canary islands they can pick up some of the satellites at 28E, although you are a lot further south than that of course.

Ooh blimey, things are not good in Ascension. Dishpointer has hardly anything useful listed!

Ha... so I should stick to buying DVD's instead of possibly wasting my money on a sat system? I am watching Al Jazeera in Arabic only right now... that is about the only interesting thing going on there. No English channels in sight. ::YAWN:: I am not sure if his starcruiser 9000 is configured properly or if it is just so old that it is not capable of seeing the channels. I am seeing a lot of "Service Not Available" messages on most channels. Who knows.

I didn't get a chance to ask my friend about the specific dish size yet. I will ask tomorrow morning when I see him again. I can't tell which one he is using to pickup nilesat. There are a few dishes around the island which are being used to pick up Armed Forces Radio and Television (US) and British Forces Broadcasting Service (RAF). It looks to be about 3m, but I can't tell for sure right now. All those military channels come in crystal clear. Hmmm... that gives me an idea. I should find out what bird those channels come from and see if there may be anything else of interest on that.

If there is something I think may be worth the money, I run into the dilemma of what type of receiver system to buy. There seems to be an overwhelming number of them out there. I suppose with more research, I will be able to narrow down the possibilities.

Thanks again guys for your help!

First thing you need to do is find out which satellite(s) your friend has access to, what sized dish is required for them and what channels are available there...

Once we know that we can start to suggest receivers / subscriptions.

Yes, dish sizes are your main problem, as there seems to be very little information availble for what you need for any of the satellites.

If there are any old 3m dishes lying around anywhere unused, grab one and have a play.:)

Id love to visit Ascension and have a play with some dishes to find out whats possible, but it doesnt seem to be much of a holiday destination.......

Squid - if you find some details of whats available can you post up as much info as possible - then we all learn something and its a useful reference for the future. :)

Just noticed this line, could you provide the frequency and satellite you are receiving this from? (Nilesat?) and we should be able to tell you what else you should be able to get.

If it is Nilesat, try scanning 11938V 27500 3/4.

And then there's Showtime, with a subscription card, some of the movies on there are in English as well.
