A cat astrophe?

OK, I´m not sure how this thing works, but it was a gift to my wife from a friend.
It is a dish / ashtray / spoon stand , or whatever it is.
The strange thing is it changes colour at different times of the day.
At this times of day, it has a green colour, or hue , but in the morning it will be a purple " ish " colour.
It changes every day between the two colours, but has no batteries. I assume it must have some form of photo sensitive element within the glass that changes due to UV light. Similar to sun glasses that change colour.
Not heat related, I stuck it in the fridge for a day and the colour did not change.
Anyone come across something like this before?

Yes.

Turned out to be a faulty fridge door switch.

Put a roll of unexposed file on it and set it inside a box for a few days, or if you happen to have an old Polaroid camera with file left in it do the same, then get the roll developed, or take a picture with the lens cap on the Polaroid, if the film is fogged it's made from uranium impregnated glass, it has that funny look to it.

This is how we found out that the old TV sets back in the 60's were radiating X rays, someones film got fogged when he left the camera on the TV set.
 
You can also try a black light, it will glow green if it's radioactive.

Mmmm, maybe. I thought uranium glass was yellow going on green, The purple colour is a problem though.

Do you have a UV lamp you can shine on it to see if it fluoresces?

It´s green without the back light, at this time of the day.
Do not have any UV light to shine on it, do have the red beam laser level if anyone thinks this could cause a change.
Going to pop it in the fridge for 5 mins to see if it makes any difference, but know it did not before.
 
No the MMMMM works fine, it's one too many beers as it's well over 100 degrees in the shade right now (40 + C for you guys) and I'm trying the old "Get buzzed on lots of beer" to cool off route.

Seems to be working as I don't care how hot it is as long as the fridge doesn't quit.

Hit it with a hair dryer and see what it does.
 
Another way is to use an AM radio, tune it to an area without a channel an listen for heavy static when you move the object in and out from it.
 
See it's the beer doing this, the DDDD is now missing on the and....I'm going to have to look around for those missing letters, I hope I don't step on one at night.
