Methane gas released by dairy cows has caused an explosion in a cow shed in Germany, police said.


The roof was damaged and one of the cows was injured in the blast in the central German town of Rasdorf.

Not a terribly surprising incident. Coming from a semi-farming background myself the venting of gases to prevent dangerous build ups is common and needs treated with care. Enclosed slurry pits are the worst - if you're going to mix its contents and break its crust doing so you need a breathing apparatus & air tank not unlike that for firemen or divers. Otherwise the leaking out of hydrogen sulphide can render you unconscious within 30 seconds and dead not long after, and not just right next to it - you can still die several hundred metres away from the pit.
