Hamburg (dpa) - A new comet currently adorns the sky: the comet McNaught 2009 R1 shimmers green in the constellation Perseus, low in the northeast sky, as the union of amateur astronomers (VdS) explained. Currently the comet is only under optimal conditions to detect with the naked eye, astronomers expect, however, that he fast on his way to the sun is brighter. On 9 September 2009 by Australian Robert McNaught comet hunter discovered comet visited for the first time the inner regions of our solar system. A prediction of its brightness is difficult. The shortest distance to Earth, the comet reached on 15 June with nearly 170 million miles - that's still more than the earthly distance from the Sun. now the questions,how good are the quality,of the cheaper 200€-300€
sky watcher telescope,in some supermarket and on ebay,any modell recomended ,that have good value for its moeny?
we can also watch maye some satellites with this little thing!

Don´t think that those scopes are more than gadgets. Had a look at Ebay and did find some really good stuff there for a nice price tag.

Currently s listed as mag 6.7 on the heavens-above site so just below naked eye visibility.

However, a New Zealand astronomer says its about 5.5 which is easily naked eye in dark locations.

Its still inbound (perihelion 2/7/10) so hopefully will brighten somewhat.

he sun is about to get a lot more active, which could have ill effects on Earth. So to prepare, top sun scientists met Tuesday to discuss the best ways to protect Earth's satellites and other vital systems from the coming solar storms.

Solar storms occur when sunspots on our star erupt and spew out flumes of charged particles that can damage power systems. The sun's activity typically follows an 11-year cycle, and it looks to be coming out of a slump and gearing up for an active period.

"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity," said Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss."

Fisher and other experts met at the Space Weather Enterprise Forum, which took place in Washington, D.C., at the National Press Club.

Bad news for gizmos

People of the 21st century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. But smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity.

A major solar storm could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina, warned the National Academy of Sciences in a 2008 report, "Severe Space Weather Events—Societal and Economic Impacts." [Photos: Sun storms.]

Luckily, much of the damage can be mitigated if managers know a storm is coming. That's why better understanding of solar weather, and the ability to give advance warning, is especially important.

Putting satellites in 'safe mode' and disconnecting transformers can protect electronics from damaging electrical surges.

Seems to be low in the north east during the evening, so should be better later.

here on the country side,far away from big citys,i go outside 3 o clock this night,sky was clear and dark!
i can you becalm,i also see nothing!
looking long time,but i only see the stars above me!
the little details are mising,i still dont know,when the comet cross europe or some areas,
we must know exactly the time when we can watch on each location other wise we have no luck,try to find out,but have no succsess at the moment.)
