Been involved in a thread in a non-satellite forum, was trying to think of smells which evoked some kind of memory or feeling.

Thought of the normal ones, like Christmas cake being baked, the smell of the Christmas Turkey being cooked, or the first summer pudding of the year, the house would fill with the delicious smell of black currants, raspberries etc, all unforgettable memories.

I then remembered the aftershave my Dad used to use, passed some twenty years now, but the smell of Old Spice, still brings memories of him back.

Anyone else have have similar experiences?

It's certainly a powerful and evocative sense. Sometimes I'll catch a whiff of something that recalls a memory from the distant past, and only much later remember what it was.

Sometimes something ridiculously trivial, like the smell of lime and orange Tic Tacs, which I remembered first as some kind of tablet they used to give us in infants school :)

I've read before that epilepsy sufferers often report a strong smell of oranges or orange peel just before a fit.

For me, having been out of the UK for many years, malt vinegar on chips has distinctly evocative memories.

I popped into my next door neigbours yesterday, they are both in their 80's and their house smells of mothballs (which I have not seen sold for a long time now). That smell always reminds me of my grandma's house, she was born in 1899 and lived until she was 93 and I used to stay there at school holdays in the 50's and sixties.

at Raasay yes I have read the same however from what I remember it is a different smell for different individuals. It is caused by the chain reaction triggering of neurons within the brain which stimulate the olfactory nerves

Smell of bacon cooking reminds me of a holiday boarding house in Morecambe when I was tiny. Yes, we did go our holiday there.

Still love the smell of brand new electrical goods, and a new car.

I can't remember what it is, but a certain smell does remind me of my ex (no, not the smell of regret :p). This is a hard thing to pin down, you don't remember smells like you remember visual object, do ya? Good Q rolf.
