‘Another hrududu’ commented the younger rabbit. ‘Yeah’ replied the older rabbit, letting a piece of clover roll from his mouth
The Transit pickup rattled past.
‘Lots more than there used to be’ said the younger rabbit, twitching and another hrududu, a Mini Cooper blasted past the opposite way.
Both rabbits huddled into the undergrowth as a motorbike blatted up the lane.
Twilight descended, and rustling though the undergrowth, a hedgehog startled the two friends.
‘Hi fella, where are you off to then?’ the older one asked.
‘Oh, across the hard ground to a good feeding place, but I fear the large creatures with the big bright eyes; they killed one of my kind here not so long ago. Squashed it and left it for the flying creatures to devour’.
‘They’re not creatures, they’re Hrududu, and humans use them; but I don’t think they kill deliberately’ said the older rabbit
The younger rabbit added ‘Look at me when the next one comes and I’ll show you what to do’
Two lights in the distance and a rumble of an engine announce the approach of another hrududu. The younger rabbit ran into the road, into the pool of light shining from the car, and dropping his head and ears kept dead still.
The car passed over and disappeared over the rise.
The younger rabbit ran back unscathed and said excitedly ‘See, it’s easy, you just look for the two lights and stand between them – as safe as a burrow’
‘Mmm…I’ll give it a try’ replied the hedgehog, and off he trundled onto the road
Two lights appeared and the hedgehog panicked.
‘Remember', called the older rabbit 'keep between the two bright lights and you will be safe’. The car bounced up the lane and the hedgehog set himself between the fast approaching lights.
A muffled bump – the car passed
As the rabbits regarded the squashed hedgehog's lifeless form the older rabbit commented to his younger friend.
‘Well b****r me! How often do you see a Reliant Robin these days?’
