Did you check the continuity through the twig with a multimeter as you built it? If not you may have a duff connection somewhere.
 
That was quick - it takes me bloody ages to get the insulating tape off :D

The bloody antenna has sagged over to 45 degrees again. I shall be replacing the plumbing pipe with 6 foot of stiffer plastic electrical conduit this weekend - the plumbing pipe will never survive the winter storms up here once it gets a bit of ice on the plastic :D

Range has dropped right off to about 40 miles again :(

Have you considered using some Wooden dowl to zip the aerial to before putting it in to the conduit?

2m of conduit in b&q was less then £2, and so far it's stood up to the wind and rain.

It does strike me that its not a very good spy plane if any Tom Dick or Harry can see its around using nothing more than chopped up tv aerial cable & a 15 quid usb dongle :-rofl2

1090 uputronics amplifier arrived - now I need to order the correct selection of interconnects.....

Over the xmas holiday I'll be seeing about getting the antenna up properly & moving the dongle & amp to the far end of an active usb extension..
