Advice for a newbie

Hi all,


I currently have a 7-year-old satelitte receiver and was thinking about updating. Tought I might ask you guys for a hint or two.

I'd like to receive Scandinavian channels (mainly Norwegian), French, Arabic and German channels. This would be easy I guess as they are all on the same continent.
I'd also like to record shows onto a hard disk, and if possible onto an external one.

Finally, doesn't matter if it's HD or not, as my tv is a SD.

I've seen the dreambox products but they seem quite expensive and too geeky for my taste. I understand they have more features but I'm also trying to get the best bang for my buck.

You would think its easy wouldnt you, but you are looking at multiple subscriptions and the requirement to view from multiple satellites!

Scandinavian channels are on 5E and will require a big dish as they use a beam targeting the Nordic area. Almost all are encrypted

There are loads of Arabic channels on 13E. A mixture of encrypted and clear services.

German channels are mainly on 19E, the major channels are broadcast in the clear.

French channels are either 5W, 19E or 13E, and its a right mixture of encrypted and free services!
 
A 1m motorised dish is probably your best bet, and with a FTA receiver you would get most of what you want, apart from (mainly) the scandinavian channels, because of their encryption. Badr4 for Arabic too.
 
Just to add you don't need a HD television to view HD channels, on a standard television, just a HD receiver, but naturally you miss out on the extra HD quality.
